"You know, this was supposed to be a combined study session", I said guiltily.

I was in the Dixit's living room chewing Boomer and watching Riverdale on Riya's laptop. With her.

"We'll start studying after this episode", Riya said lazily stretching her legs next to me.

I grinned at her, "Mishti knew we'd be doing this. That's why she didn't join us".

At that precise moment, the landline rang wildly in the table next to me. Riya leapt forward to pick it up.

"Is anybody there?", I could make out a loud male voice asking from the other end.

"No, the phone picked itself up", Riya replied.

I facepalmed and laughed.

I only heard one side of the rest of the very short conversation ended quickly.

Riya's parents came into the room too looking very serious.

"We're going to have an IT raid", Saba Aunty said anxiously, "I'm so sorry Zoya dear. If only, you still lived in Bandra we would've been able to send you home".

"Why don't we just lock the house and go away somewhere?", Riya asked.

"What are you blabbering?"

"But why not? Why can't we just give them the slip?"

"Because that is too easy and it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard", Riya's dad said "Staying here and facing the problem is difficult. But also the right thing to do"

"Not need to get scared you all", Saba Aunty told me and Riya, "Let them come and do their thing".

"They've come", Riya's dad said coming out from the balcony, "They'll be up here in no time".

"Zoya, come with me to my room", Riya suddenly.

"What do you want Riya... can't it wait?", Saba Aunty interjected.

"No..just give us a second mom", Riya said as she grabbed my hand and ran into her room and shut the door but didn't lock it.

"What are you doing?"

Riya wordlessly dragged me to the balcony attached to her bedroom and said, "Let's jump from here".

"Riya! Are you crazy?"

"Let's jump and escape", she said rubbing her hands eagerly.

"That's supposed to be...how many feet?", I asked peering down.

"I don't know", Riya said, "Let's do it come on", she said, actually making to climb the railing.

"We might die", I said trying to inject some common sense into the conversation.

"But if we don't, we can tell this story to everyone forever!", Riya said looking extremely excited, "Jumped from the third floor and escaped from Income tax officers! How cool does that sound? This is once in a lifetime opportunity, Zoya".

Friends we might be, but right now I felt I had to put my foot down.

"Riya..."

"What?"

But somewhere, a monster inside my chest seemed to have woken up. Like a dragon. A dragon that found the idea of this, enormously appealing.

The ground directly below the balcony was covered in sprawling green lawn. We might have a smooth landing. Though, we might also break our legs. But somehow I couldn't resist the temptation. Just like I hadn't been able to resist the temptation of plenty of Riya's outrageous suggestions in the past.

"Okay let's do this", I said climbing over the railing trying not to shake too much. Riya was already standing on it as though she did this everyday.

"Grab my hand", she commanded and I reached out and clasped her steady hand with my slightly sweaty palm.

"We jump on three!", Riya said.

"Okay", I tried to say but the power of speech seemed to have abandoned me. I merely nodded as I heard the front door open.

"One...", Riya said slowly as I felt I was forgetting how to stand.

"Two...", Riya said as her grip on my hand tightened.

What was I thinking? This was suicide! Mom and dad would flip out!

"Three.....jump!"

jump!"
