Cheryl had just finished meeting with one of her patients and she was waiting on Valerie to finish up with hers. There had to be something in the ice chips because four of Valerie's patients went into labor within 15 minutes of each other.
Sitting in her office playing Sudoku, there was a knock on her door.
"Come in."
"Hi Cheryl, how are you?"
"Hi Dr. Benet, what can I do for you?"
"I was wondering if you've seen Valerie?" Dr. Benet asked
"Uhm yeah she's actually doing her last delivery, so she should be finished in about 15 minutes."
"Could you have her come to my office when she's done?"
"Yes, sure I'll tell her."
"Thanks." Dr. Benet says before closing the door
Besides being her boss, Dr. Benet and Valerie were in a secret relationship. Cheryl was the only person that knew about it.
*20 minutes*
Valerie comes in Cheryl's office and sits down and let's a breath that she didn't know she was holding
"I don't ever want to see another pair of stirrups or hear another woman scream, "TAKE IT OUT" for the next 10 years."
Cheryl laughs and says, "you were running around here like a chicken with its head cut off. Are you up to going to lunch or do you want to order here? I'm actually done with all of my patients today, so it's your choice."
"Can we order in, I want to take a nap until my next appointment at 5 so that gives me at least 4 hours to rest." Valerie said
"Okay, sounds like a plan. Dr. Benet wants to see you in his office as well. I'll order for you while you go talk to him."
"Thanks girl, I shouldn't be long." Valerie replied as she got up and left
Heading to Dr. Benet's office, Valerie tried to figure out what he could possibly want to see her for. They both knew to keep their relationship a secret, so it couldn't be anything pertaining to that. Instead of wrecking her brain, she decided to wait to see what he wanted.
*knock knock*
"Come in."
"Hi, Dr. Benet, Cheryl said you wanted to see me?"
"Yes I did. Have a seat Dr. Sheard."
Valerie took a seat with a scared look on her face Dr. Benet noticed it and reassured her that everything was okay.
"Don't worry, you're not in trouble or anything. I wanted to see you because I just received some amazing news. So you remember the job promotion opportunity that I told you about.? He asked
"Yes, I remember. The job that's located in Dallas." Valerie replied
"Yes, well you got the job!" Dr. Benet exclaimed
Valerie looked shocked and had to make sure she heard correctly
"I- I'm sorry, did you say I got the job?"
"Yes you did."
"How? It's been well over 2 years since I heard about the promotion I thought they went with someone else.'
"No, they've actually been watching you this entire time and they finally made a decision last week. They know about you having a child, so they are willing to wait on you for a least a year as long as you accept the position." Dr. Benet explained
"I would love to accept it, but I don't want to take Karen out of school just yet with the school year just starting. Or take her away from her friends." Valerie sighed
"I understand that. How about you take some to think about it and get back with me in about 2 weeks."
"Thanks Dr. Benet. Have a good day." Valerie said leaving
Cheryl texted Valerie and told her their food had arrived. She replied saying she was heading back that way. Valerie walked in Cheryl's office grabbed her food and sat in the recliner.
"So how'd it go?" Cheryl asked
"You remember the job promotion that I was up for 2 years ago. The one in Dallas?"
"Yeah what about it?"
"I got the job."
"AHHH! Congratulations girl!" Cheryl said
"Thanks." Valerie said in a somber tone
"I know that tone. What's wrong, talk to me."
"I would love to take this job, but I just don't know how Karen is going to react to the news. You know her and Doe are joined at the hip. She'll hate me if I tell her we have to move." Valerie said picking at her food
"Look, I don't think Karebear will hate you. She'll be disappointed, but I don't think she'll hate you. She'll have to understand that this opportunity is great for the both of you. I think you moving to a new city, is what the both of you need. The day that Terrance walked out on you was heartbreaking, but you didn't allow that to break you. You picked yourself up and you went on with your life, raising Karen and giving her everything she deserved." Cheryl said kneeling next to a crying Valerie
"I know. I just have to find a way to tell her. If I accept the job, they'll give me a year to move. At least Karen can finish her junior year with Doe." Valerie said wiped her tears
"Well, how about this. I'll help you find a way to tell her and Doe together. How's that sound?" Cheryl asked "Yeah I'd like that." Valerie said
"Good. Now let's eat and sleep. I love you girl."
"Love you too." They both hugged and Cheryl went back to her desk
They begin eating their food, but Valerie couldn't stop thinking about the job offer. She decided that she'll pray on it before making her decision. She just hopes that it'll be the right decision
After the ate, they threw their trash away, Valerie got a blanket and a pillow and reclined the chair back, while Cheryl closed the curtains, locked her office door, turned off the lights and laid on the couch and they both went to sleep until Valerie's next appointment.
