We Promised.... But What Happened?

Everyone slept so well last night, that they slept through the alarms. All 5 of them. Right now, Val, Cheryl, Karen and Doe were running around The Clark household looking like chickens with their heads cut off trying to get ready and get to their destinations on time.

"Girls! Are you ready?" Valerie yelled from the bottom of the stairs

"Yes, we're coming!" They bellowed back

2 minutes later Karen and Doe rushed down the stairs and everyone was out the door. They got Cheryl's truck and were off. With only 10 minutes to spare, Karen finished Doe's hair in the car and then fixed hers. Luckily there was no traffic and the way Cheryl drives, they made it in under 6 minutes.

"Okay, girls have a good day. Love you." Val and Cheryl said as the girls rushed out of the car

"Love you mom. Have a good day." The girls kissed their mothers and ran towards the school.
They ran to their lockers grabbed their books and ran to class. They made it just time with 3 minutes to spare. They sat down and were out of breath.

"We waited for you two, but we figured y'all were already here, but we see that wasn't the case." Tam said

"We're sorry. We overslept. We didn't even get to eat breakfast, so I'm gonna have an attitude until lunch. Y'all know I can get when I don't eat or get enough sleep." Doe replied

"Yeah we know. Which I why I brought this from home." Jacky said pulling out a box of Strawberry and Brown Sugar Cinnamon Poptarts for both Karen and Doe

"AHHHH! Thank you girl. You love us." Karen said grabbing the box

"Yeah and I got these from the store this morning before we came to school." Tam said giving two Apple Juices to them

"Y'all really don't want me to have an attitude today huh?" Doe asked laughing

"After yesterday's little scuffle or whatever you wanna call it. I want peace today between you and Mrs. Dawns." Jacky replies

The bell rang and they hid their snacks as Mrs. Dawns walked into the class.

"Good morning class. Before we begin, I would like to take this time to apologize to Miss Cole. I didn't mean to put you on the spot the way I did. In all my years of teaching, I never met a student that never matched my intellect the way you do. So I really hope that you can accept my apology." Mrs. Dawns said as she faced Dorinda

To say she was shocked was an understatement. Jacky, Karen and Tam along with the whole class was looking shocked as well. Dorinda had to be in a daze because Karen had to nudge her for her to say something.

"Oh, uhm I'm sorry. Yes, I accept your apology. But you didn't have to do that." Doe said

"No I needed too. Thank you." Mrs. Dawns replied as she headed back to her desk

"Girl. What was that about?" Karen asked

"Right. Hearing all the stories about her, I would've never thought she would apologize to her students." Jacky said

"I have no idea what that was about. But hey, let's just move on before she decides to take it back." Doe said

"Okay class. So I will be giving you all a packet today. This packet will consist of over 200 math problems-" Mrs. Dawns was interrupted by the class

All you heard were the moans and groans and even mumbled curse words from the class

"Now wait, before you all get upset. Let me finish." She continued.

"You will work on this packet all year long. You will be able to work in groups of 2-4. There will be some things that you remember that your group may not and vice versa. So you will be able to help each other. You may or not finish the entire packet but I want you to at least attempt 65% of the packet so that I can see your work ethic. Send one person from your group to retrieve your packets and you may get started."

Nobody felt like moving so Karen gave in and she went and got them. As she headed back to her seat, Mrs. Dawns called out to her.

"Miss Sheard, could you see me after class please?" She asked

"Uh yeah sure." Karen replied as she headed back to her desk

They turned their desks so that they were facing each other. Since the packet was broken down in sections so they reach to a section and started working.

"What did Mrs. Dawns say to you?" Doe asked while she was working on a problem

"She asked me to see her after class. Not sure why though." Karen replied

"Do you need us to stay back and wait? You know if needed I can hit her pressure points if she steps outta line." Tam said

"Must everything have to be about hiring someone with you." Jacky asked

They laughed at Jacky's comment

"No I'm sure it's nothing." Karen said

They continued working on their packets. During that time, they were also having a mini concert to themselves. Mrs. Dawns couldn't help but over hear them. She was amazed at how well their voices were so synced together. Listening to Karen sing only proved her suspicion and theory. She just hopes that it won't cause any problems.

The bell finally rang and everyone gathered their belongings and left out. Karen told her girls that she'll see them in 3rd block and not worry. Of course Tam being Tam gave Mrs. Dawns the look which cause Jacky and Doe to drag her out of class.

"Mrs. Dawns, what did you need to see me for?" Karen asked

"I saw you yesterday in Chorus as I was walking by. Then I hear you singing earlier and I couldn't help but your beautiful harmonies." Mrs. Dawns said

"I'm sorry. We weren't trying to be so loud." Karen apologized

"It's okay. I wanted to ask if you ever thought about singing with Detroit Mass Choir as a special guest? We're having a conference in a few months and my husband is the musical director and we could really use someone like you. I can even ask your friends if they would like to join as well so you won't be too nervous." Mrs. Dawns suggested

"Uhm I never thought about singing with a choir before. Especially The Detroit Mass Choir. But I'll have to talk my mom first about it. Of course Dorinda, Jacky and Tam will have to do the same. But I'll talk to them about it though." Karen said

"Thanks. If your mom needs to speak with me and my husband personally about it. I don't have a problem." Mrs. Dawns said

"Okay, I'll let you know. Have a good day Mrs. Dawns." Karen said as she gathered her things and headed out the door

As soon as she stepped out the door she was frightened by Jacky, Doe and Tam.

"What are y'all still doing here? I thought I told y'all to go to class?" She said looking at them crazy

"You really thought we were gonna listen to you?" Jacky said

"Right. Besides we were not about to leave you with Lady Tremaine." Doe said

"What did she want?" Tam asked

"We can talk about it at lunch. But y'all need to get to class." Karen said to Jacky and Tam

"Oh we have a sub so we're good." They replied

"What's your excuse, Doe?" Karen looked at her

"I have none. But if y'all skipping them I'm skipping." Doe said

"Well y'all can come chill with me in the office then since it's my free period. But I gotta go to my locker first" Karen said

"Cool. I can take my nap." Doe said

They headed to Karen's locker so she could put her books up and then they headed to the office where Karen had her own private room to do whatever. Since she was an office aid, she could come in anytime she needed to do her work or when she had a substitute teacher.

They decided to follow in Doe's footsteps and take a nap. They had an hour and half to do so. That's all they needed. But she still had Mrs. Dawns request on her and couldn't shake it. Why would she ask her out of all the other people in the Chorus class. She pushed the thought to the back of her mind and fell asleep. She'll deal with it later
