chapter twenty two

jake had stayed in hospital with gina all night, as he said he would. oscar diaz had also showed up when the squad left. gina called him and explained everything to him, including the part about what the doctor had said, and he was there within minutes

gina hadn't slept much; she didn't let herself incase there was any news on rosa, but even when jake told her that maybe she should try to get some sleep, she barely got five minutes without waking up because she was worried. oscar also hadn't slept much, his little girl was fighting for her life.

'miss linetti,' one of the doctors from yesterday came over to her. 'miss diaz is much more stable than yesterday, she can almost breathe on her own which means her lungs are getting stronger but we can't operate quite yet due to the amount of blood she lost yesterday.'

'what does that mean? can you operate soon?'

'as soon as she has enough blood for us to safely operate, we will. she has a pretty rare blood type so a blood transfusion is hard to do, but she's creating the normal amount of blood anyway, completely by herself.'

'can i see her?'

'i can allow three adults in at once, they don't have to be immediate family but if kids are going in too then make sure they don't pull at the wires. most of them have been removed but there are still a few.'

'thanks,' gina smiled lightly

'no problem,' the doctor smiled before walking away

'do you wanna see her?' the redhead asked her childhood best friend

'yeh of course i do, only if you're okay with that tho.'

gina nodded, 'do you wanna see her alone for a couple of minutes?' she turned to face oscar

'if you don't mind,' he smiled at gina, his eyes welling with tears

most of the squad still had to work, jake and amy had been given some time off by holt, and of course gina was still on maternity leave.

it was around 9.30 when amy turned up with both girls, iggy running over to her abuelo as soon as she saw him

jake and gina were with rosa when the trio arrived, jake holding one of rosa's hands and gina holding the other.

'i only met rosa because of you.' gina sobbed, 'you're the reason i have my job, you're the reason i have everything.' she tried to smile at jake through the tears

jake smiled back slightly, not really knowing what to say

'thank you jake.'

'gina, you don't have to thank me. you're my best friend, i'd do anything for you and you know that.'

'can you make rosa be okay for me?' the woman's sobs grew heavier

'you know i would if i could.' the man stood up and walked round to the other side of the bed so that he could wrap gina in a tight hug. they stayed like that for a couple of minutes, gina just sobbing into jake's shoulder

'mommy?' iggy stood at the door with amy behind her

gina pulled away from jake and opened her arms for iggy, 'hey princess.' she tried her best to smile. 'momma's okay, she's just really really tired so she's getting some sleep okay?' gina told the girl as the pair looked over the latina.

'we'll be outside if you need us gina,' jake told her before he and amy left the room

'you wanna hold her hand?' gina asked her daughter
