A child's cries cut through the dull morning like a knife.

The source of the noise, a young girl clutching a filthy blanket, stumbles past the homes.

Blood stains her hair and clothes, though she's afflicted by no injuries that could produce that much.

A woman runs out into the street, followed closely by her fiancee. She kneels down to talk to the girl, who quickly quiets down.

After a few minutes of conversation, the woman picks the child up, her small hands grabbing onto the fabric of her shirt.

She nods to her fiancee and he runs back in to prepare a bath and warm clothes for the girl.

The woman follows, and just before the door closes behind her, the child who she thought had fallen asleep opens her eyes and stares back at the dirt road. An object lies in her sight, unnoticed by the preoccupied woman and her partner.

Lying on the ground, dropped by the girl from under her blanket, is a bloodied knife.
