A/N: Happy Canada day!

Jaxon's eyes darkened further when he looked over my face with a closer eye. I could see each flake of gold dance in the firelight as they roamed over my disguised face.  I remained relatively calm until his eyes locked onto mine. This time, his sparked with recognition.

My eyes.

They widened as I had a horrifying realization. It wasn't a concern earlier since I had never met Norman before, but now I couldn't help but wonder; We're my eyes hidden by the glamour, or unchanged like Ares were?

The thought had me looking away from Jaxon in fear that he would recognize me like how Norman had recognized Ares.

Before I remembered that my eyes were just plain brown. There was nothing memorable about them. They weren't gold or lavender, nor did they change colour. The realization helped calm my racing heart, but just barely. Eyes or no eyes, Jaxon was heading in a dangerous direction with his questions. One that would reveal my identity more than the blood coating his digits.

"Like how most glamours work," Zev answered as he stirred the boiling stew over the open flames. "Why?" Although he asked, with his narrowing eyes, I had a feeling he had an idea as to why. Zev stopped stirring the brow liquid swimming with vegetables and sat up straight once Jaxon presented his offending fingers to him.

"Just wondering if it changed the blood flowing through someone's veins," Jaxon shrugged without taking his eyes off me.

"No." Zev's eyes didn't leave me either as he answered Jaxon. Both of them could clearly see my breaths quicken further in panic and fear. "Check for any jewelry. Rings, bracelets, or necklaces," Zev said, rising to his feet. He crossed his arms and watched closely after issuing the command.

And that's what it was. A command. It was clear in the tone of his voice.

Although it didn't seem like Jaxon appreciated being spoken to as such, he didn't display his displeasure with more than a twist of his feature before doing as Zev demanded. First, he checked my fingers for rings and my wrist for bracelets since he had them held in place above my head. The position gave him a perfect view of the ring Ares had given me for protection. When he caught sight of it, his brow twitched before he glanced down at me again. Smug arrogance sparked in his eyes as he come to the incorrect conclusion that he had found the glamour keeping me hidden.

"You're not very good at hiding, princess," he mocked as he wiped his fingers clean on his thigh as he sat up, straddling me. He pulled my hands towards him as he did. He dropped the one free of adornments onto my stomach while holding the other up in front of him.

Breathing became nearly impossible as he reached out for the only form of protection I had. When his fingers touched the tip of mine holding the ring, I reacted purely out of instinct. My actions caught me off guard as much as they did Jaxon when I suddenly pushed against the ground to sit up, using my free arm. His grip had softened on my wrist, allowing for me to push forward out of his hold.

Shocked at successfully making it out of his hold, I was stunned still for a moment. It was strange going from struggling fruitlessly to suddenly succeeding.

Fire glinting off the ring on my finger caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. I snapped out of it and rushed into action without thinking of the consequences that would follow. Jaxon had triggered my fight mode by taking away the option for flight. I couldn't run away if I was pinned in place. I had no option but to fight.

Using my thumb to twist the outer band of the ring, the thin needle came shooting out as I struck out towards his throat, aiming for his Adam's apple.

For a moment, I felt the rush and exhilaration that came with knowing that you were going to win, but that was dashed when long and elegant fingers wrapped around my wrist, stopping my attack. It took me a moment to realize they weren't Jaxon's rough hands, but when I did realize it, I also realized the fatal mistake I had made.
