Betty's heart stopped.

She felt the betrayal coursing through her veins.

She reached inside her husband's nightstand pulling out the offending item and almost shivering at the moment of contact.

He'd promised.

She'd made sacrifices and he promised that he would too.

He broke that promise.

The betrayal was taken over by anger.

They were supposed to communicate.

They were supposed to be partners.

They were supposed to be honest with each other.

She trudged down the stairs, still unable to take her eyes off the object that felt so heavy in her hands.

"Did you find it? I really think that the programme could benefit Junebug. I'll send it to her tomorrow on my way to work." Jughead spoke as his wife turned into the kitchen.

His head was down as he prepared their dinner.

"Betts?" He asked, realising that his wife wasn't paying attention.

"Couldn't you find the leaflet? I put it on your nightstand." Jughead said.

"I thought you said it was your nightstand." Betty mumbled, lifting her hand up to fiddle with the cigarette packet in her hand.

Jughead looked confused before he saw what was in her hands.

"You're smoking?" Betty accused, her head still down, not being able to bring herself to look at him.

"Not smoking. I occasionally have a cigarette, Betts but-"

"But what? You don't smoke it? What do you do? Stick it up your nose? Why the hell are you doing this, Jug? Why?" She said, incredulously, finally looking up at him with disappointment in her eyes.

"I only have one when I'm stressed, it's not a big deal!" Jughead replied, defensively.

"Not a big deal?" Betty asked, pain written across her features.

"You know what? You can't judge me for this, Betty. It's a personal choice that I made as an individual so it has nothing to do with you." Jughead said, anger starting to melt into his tone.

"Nothing to do with me? What about the marital choice that we made as husband and wife? Or did you forget about that?" Betty questioned, angrily.

"Of course I haven't fucking forgotten, it's half the reason I do it!" He blurted.

Betty looked at him in shock and confusion.

"Jughead, I..." Betty spluttered.

He sighed.

"I don't smoke because of it. I smoke because it stresses me out. Because nothing is happening." Jughead corrected.

"What, so my failure is causing you to smoke? Thanks, Jug, that makes me feel fantastic!" Betty yelled.

"What? No! It isn't a failure, Betty, and it sure as hell isn't yours." Jughead stated.

"Well then who the hells is it?" She cried.

"It could be mine just as much as it is yours! But it's not a failure, Betts. There's still a chance..." Jughead trailed off.

"Not if you keep smoking. You promised when we started trying that you weren't going to smoke! We both know that it isn't good for conception and I want to make sure that we have the best possible chances! It seems to me that you just don't want the same thing!" Betty rambled.
