The family sat in the dining room to eat. Rachel watched her father eat the food she cooked and she grew teary. “For the first time, my father ate the food I cooked” she thought.
“Is everything alright?” Vicky asked her quietly, though he sounded like he was trying not to care.
Rachel was surprised by his sudden concern but nodded. “Yes, I’m fine. Thank you for asking” She said and looked at her plate. Bethany watched the exchange with a curious look.
Everyone began eating. “The food is good, you are an amazing cook Rachel” Manuel said pleased.
“Thank you” Rachel answered quietly. Vicky ate quietly without betraying any emotion. He was carefully quiet.
“I was wondering, Bethany, how old are you?” Juliana asked.
“Ma?” Bethany said surprised.
“How old are you?” Juliana asked again. Everyone looked at Juliana curious at what she was getting to. Bethany looked around seeming uncomfortable.
“Wow, that is a huge age gap between you and Vicky.” Juliana exclaimed. “almost nine years. Senator, since Bethany is older, why didn’t you get her married to Vicky instead? Did you want to insult us by sending the…ugly one?”
Everyone stopped eating and Rachel pursed her lips to hide her distaste. “It’s okay Rachel, everyone always insults you anyway. It’s not like it’s anything new.” She thought.
Vicky stared blankly at his stepmother who was focused on an uncomfortable Bethany. Austin watched this with interest.
“Juliana” Manuel said scoldingly.
“What? I am just pointing out the obvious question. I don’t see why the younger sister would get married first, especially when it is an arranged marriage” Juliana said defensively.
Senator Uche forced a laugh, “You see–”
“Why is it important who I marry? The eldest or the youngest” Vicky spoke up surprising everyone. He coolly leveled his gaze at Juliana. “it doesn’t matter anymore, I’m married to Rachel now so it’s a pointless topic.”
“Also, don’t you think you are insulting Rachel too much” he continued. “I don’t see what is so ugly about her in your eyes. She looks stunning enough for me.”
Bethany and Bisola looked at Vicky shocked at what he was saying while Senator Uche stared at him in disbelief. In fact, the entire table looked shocked to hear that from his mouth.
