"Hey, Cap! Red!"
Cap and I both glance at each other before we jog over to Sam in the old car shop and walk into the room. The machine in the middle has a clamp, which is keeping Bucky's metal arm in place.
He groans, his head hanging low. He glances over at Cap. "Steve," he says.
"Which Bucky am I talking to?"
Bucky lifts his head a little and sighs. "Your mom's name was Sarah." He smiles a little. "You used to wear newspapers in your shoes," he chuckles.
"Can't read that in a museum," Cap says.
"Just like that, we're supposed to be cool?" Sam asks.
"It wasn't his fault," I tell Sam. "Who knows what dick for brains did when the power went out. He didn't act like that before they were alone in that room together."
"What did I do?" Bucky asks.
"Enough," Cap says.
Bucky closes his eyes and sighs. "Oh, God. I knew this would happen. Everything HYDRA put inside me is still there. All he had to do was say the goddamn words."
"Who was he?" Cap asks.
"I don't know."
"People are dead," Cap says. "The bombing, the setup. The doctor did all that just to get 10 minutes with you. I need you to do better than 'I don't know.'"
Bucky pauses, furrowing his brows. "He wanted to know about Siberia. Where I was kept." He tilts his head. "He wanted to know exactly where."
"Why would he need to know that?" Cap asks.
"Because I'm not the only Winter Soldier."
"Who were they?"
"Their most elite death squad. More kills than anyone in HYDRA history. And that was before the serum."
"They all turn out like you?" Sam asks.
"Worse."
"Worse?" I ask, then shake my head. "Jesus, I hate Nazis."
"The doctor," Cap says, "could he control them?"
"Enough," Bucky replies.
"Said he wanted to see an empire fall," Cap says.
"With these guys, he could do it," Bucky says. "They speak 30 languages, can hide in plain sight, infiltrate, assassinate, destabilize. They can take a whole country down in one night, you'd never see them coming."
Sam walks over to Cap and says something to him. I sigh and lean against the wall, crossing my arms over my chest. "I'm taking off the clamp," I tell them. Sam goes to say something to stop me, but Cap stops him, and they continue with their quiet conversation.
I walk over to Bucky and get the clamp off his arm. He moves it around a little before putting his hands together and looking down. "Thanks," he says to me.
"No problem," I say to him, sitting down next to him on the ground. "Are you okay?"
He nods and continues to stare at the ground. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"Well, I'm going to take that response with a grain of salt because I know you've gone through hell."
"How could you possibly know that?"
"How could I not?" I ask him, turning to look at him. He glances at me. "Cap's told me a lot about you. And I know a some of what they did to you. And, I know I had no part of it, but I'm sorry you had to go through it all."
"You're kind."
"Occasionally," I tell him. "But, we haven't actually met yet, other than you trying to kill me. So, hello, my name is Cher May Wilson. Do not be fooled, Sam and I are in no way related."
He glances at Sam, then back to me. His face breaks into a small smile. "Well, May, my name is James Buchanan Barnes. It's a pleasure to meet you."
—
Cap gets out of the car and walks over to Sharon. They talk, and she pops open her trunk to show Cap's, Sam's, and my things in it.
"Can you move your seat up?" Bucky asks Sam, glaring at the back of his head from right next to me.
"No," Sam deadpans.
"This is so enjoyable," I say, sitting next to Bucky.
Bucky turns to me. "Can we switch?"
"Sure," I say.
He moves a little, so I grab the seats in front of us, getting off the seat and moving over him. He stays still as I do so. When I sit down in his spot, he moves.
"Jesus," Sam mutters. "Try not to stare at her ass next time."
I see Cap step forward and kiss Sharon. I roll down my window a little bit, and say, "Get it, Cap!" Sam tries to hold in his laugh as Cap flips me off. I gasp and roll up my window. "I cannot believe Captain America just flipped me off. I am entirely flabbergasted."
Sam shakes his head. "I have never meet someone so sarcastic."
"It's a gift."
"Okay, Richie Tozier," Sam says.
—
"What the fuck kind of parking job is this?" I ask Cap as I climb out of the back seat through the front.
"I haven't driven in 70 years, give me a break," Cap says.
"That is a lie," I tell him, walking around the car. "You stole that truck when we got that hard drive and almost got blown up by a 100-year-old computer scientist."
"Whatever."
"Hey, Cap," Clint says, walking around the van parked a couple spaces over.
"You know I wouldn't have called if I had any other choice," Cap says to him, shaking his hands.
"Hey, man, you're doing me a favor," Clint says, nodding to Wanda. "Besides, I owe a debt."
"Thanks for having my back," Cap says to Wanda.
"It was time to get off my ass," Wanda says.
"Who's that?" Bucky asks me, nodding to the guy that is now crawling out of the back of the van.
"Scott Lang," I tell him. "Ant Man. He has a suit that can make him the size of an ant. Hence the name."
He nods. "Do you have a superhero name?"
"Well, I'm no superhero. But they started calling me Redshot a few years back." I shrug. "I don't get it. I use pistols and have a red suit. I think that's about the only thing that contributes to it."
He nods. "What about the other guy?"
"Sam?"
"Yeah. Him."
"Falcon."
"What else."
"He knows Cap and is friends with him. He took us and Natasha Romanoff in when everyone else was trying to kill us. Now he's my friend too. He's a good guy."
Bucky hums and nods, then turns to the group in front of us. "We should get moving," he says, getting their attention.
"We got a chopper lined up," Clint says. "Oh, hey, Cher."
"Hey, Clint!"
A man starts speaking over the intercom in German. I make out 'airport' and that's about it. I only took German for one year, and that was about eight or so years ago.
"They're evacuating the airport," Bucky translates for us.
"Stark," Sam says.
"Stark?" Scott asks.
"Oh, yeah, you gotta fight him too," I tell him.
Cap nods. "Suit up."
