The night of Rudra and Soumya's sangeet
Akash laughed as he watched his father and his cousin Uncle attempted to follow Manoj's dance moves.
It was already past 2 AM and most of the guests had retired to their rooms. He too should head to bed soon because he knew he would be waking up to a hangover and the lack of sleep wouldn't help. The only people remaining on the dance floor were a few stragglers like himself, his father, a few of his cousins and the main couple who as usual was tucked into a corner lost in their world.
The sangeet night had been even more fun than the engagement party. Maybe because it was much more organized and had various events for everyone apart from dancing including a giant Jenga and Tetris. While he didn't like being a part of the stage performance, he did enjoy the purpose behind the evening- a toast to the happy beginnings for the couple. He couldn't be happier for his brother and sister-in-law.
“Alright. Good night! I am going to bed. You should too,” He yelled in the direction of his father before walking over to Soumya and Rudra. As he approached them, he could sense some tension between them. “Everything okay?”
Soumya stood from her seat and crossed her arms over her chest. “No, all thanks to your brother.”
“I can fix this. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?” Rudra asked, rubbing his forehead.
She scoffed. “I am making a big deal? You know what? Forget it! It's pointless talking to you,” she said and stomped off in the opposite direction of the hotel lobby and towards the pool.
“What's going on?”
“Nothing. I'll tell you later,” Rudra hurriedly said to him as he rushed to follow Soumya.
He watched on as Rudra caught up to her and tried to hold her hand, but she wasn't having any of it. He didn't understand what had gone wrong in the last 20 minutes. Because before that they were both slow dancing on the dance floor to a high-energy Bollywood song that was meant to be anything other than a slow dance number. He wondered if he should go and check up on them, then shook his head and decided against it.
Akash sauntered over to the hotel lobby and pressed on the button for the elevator. The elevator arrived shortly, but instead of it being empty as he expected, Dhara walked out of the elevator doors. She had changed out of her lime green saree tunic into her pj's. The reason he knew what her outfit was called was that she kept describing it to him the entire night all because he had teased her about wearing a saree.
“Have you seen my sister?”
“Yeah. She is with my brother. I saw them walking towards the pool.”
Dhara frowned. Her shoulders dropped and she nodded. “Okay. Thanks.”
“What's wrong with your face?”
She touched her face and gasped, “What's wrong with my face? Is it red? Am I reacting to the foundation the makeup artist used? I knew it. I should have checked.” She looked at her reflection in the mirror on the wall.
He chuckled. “You look sad.”
She rolled her eyes and entered the elevator once again after him. “I am not.”
