When Shay walked in with my mom Jalen instantly started eyeing me.
I don't know why my mom brought her here.
"Hey Kaseem." Shay said and I ignored her.
"Stop being childish boy say hi ta ha." My mom said.
"Heyy Shayy." Jalen said and I mugged him.
"Mari bear!" My mom yelled.
"Ma no." I said and heard little footsteps coming down the hallway.
"Look who's here." She said with a smile on her face.
Mari was frozen.
"Mari baby come here." My mom said and she refused to move.
I got up off the couch and walked over to her.
"Mari come on," I said and she grabbed my hand.
I could feel her little handshaking.
"Shay go ahead in the kitchen I'll be there in a minute." My mom said with a smile.
As Shay left the room we all gave my mom a look.
"Now mama why would you bring ha here." Jalen said.
"I needed help around the house." She said.
"Your lying ma." Jalen said and she sighed.
"I wanted Mari to have her mother back into her life." She said and me and Mari looked at each other.
"She doesn't need her," I said.
"Yea Mommy a bitch." Mari said and Jalen's jaw dropped.
"Mari." I said.
She covered her mouth and sat on the couch next to Jalen.
"See her mama would never let her speak like that." My mom said and Jalen got up.
"You not her mom doe." Jalen said walking away from my mom.
He knew damn well he was gonna get his ass beat.
"She needs one that's all I'm saying." My mom said and Jalen scoffed.
"Nigga shut up and go drink a juice box or sum." I said.
"This grown folks business." I added and he rolled his eyes.
"I think it's best if I take Mari for a little while." My mom said.
"No." I said and she widened her eyes.
I saw Shay walk out the kitchen.
"Shay baby tell Kaseem you want to be a family again." My mom said and she looked at Mari and Me.
"..."
She stayed quiet and my mom was getting frustrated.
"Mari don't you want to stay with grandma for a while." My mom said looking at her.
"No I want to stay with daddy." She said.
"And find a new mommy." She added.
"Damn." Jalen said.
"Jalen go to yo room." I said and he did so with Mari running behind him.
"Ma I'm taking Mari home." I said.
"She needs a mother." She said.
"She had one." I said and Mari came back.
"She has to stay with me she's not going to make it with you especially with you running these streets.
"Mari let's go." I said and she looked back at Jalen's room.
"Jalen on the floor." Mari said and I walked to his room.
I saw Jalen lying on the floor eyes closed and tongue hanging out his mouth.
I looked at Mari and she laughed.
"Always tryna be the center of attention." I mumbled and he laughed.
"Aight we leaving." I said and Mari grabbed my hand.
"I'm going wit y'all." Jalen said and followed behind us.
"Nah you be playing too much." I said and he laughed.
"Only cause uh-" he said with his finger on his chin.
"Cause uhhh." I said.
"Cause I'm bored?" He said and I rolled my eyes and walked out the door.
"Jalen get yo ass back in this house." My mom said and he ignored her and left the house with us.
"You gon get yo ass beat." I said and he shrugged.
"She ain't just gon disrespect y'all like that." He said and I shook my head and we drove off.
