I sat with Joe in a dark corner of the park where no one would bother us or even notice us early on the Saturday before his game. I liked to think about his game coming up and not me going away two days after.

"I want to come see you play." We'd talked about it before. He didn't think it was a good idea. I didn't care. I'd never seen him play before. I'd never even seen a game of rugby, never having been interested in it before and from what Simon and a few other players had told me Joe was good. Their star player even.

"My parents are going to be there."

"And most of the school! I'll stand in the crowd there's no way they'll even see me! Besides I'm just going to a school event. Showing school spirit."

Joe laughed, "you show school spirit now?"

"If I have to yes."

"I still don't think it's a good idea. It's just a rugby game. I'll tell you what happens."

"Joe!" I moan, "it's your game! I want to see you play! I don't care what happens!"

He looked at me confused, "so you don't even want us to win?"

"Course I want you to win!" I rolled my eyes, "but I'm more interested seeing you run around the field." I grinned.

He grinned back, "you have no clue how rugby works do you? How about I just run around a field for you now?" He offered.

"You don't just run around the field?" I teased, "there's a ball too right. And yes I would love that." I looked at him expectedly.

"Something like that." He stood up ignoring his previous offer, "I've got to go now, wish me luck."

I stood up too and he helped me brush off any dirt from my clothes. I think it was more of an excuse to touch my bum but I didn't mind.

I reached up and kissed him, "sorry you've got to go to this." It was the anniversary of his uncles death and all the families got together. I knew he hated it. "You can come round mine after if you like."

"I'll see you later." He kissed me again.

I headed home.

I was just sitting down with my mum for a cup of tea when there was a loud knocking on the door. My dad shouted in from the living room that he would get it then called through, "Olivia, I think it's for you."

I got up confused.

At the door stood Joe. He looked like he had ran all the way here. Looking into his eyes he looked upset about something.

"What's wrong?" I took his hand and pulled him inside.

The living room was empty now, dad must have gone into the kitchen with mum. I brought Joe in there.

"What is it?" I asked again, he was almost scaring me.

"They wouldn't let me inside." His voice was small, smaller than I'd ever heard it. My heart broke for him. I was torn between wanting to go down there myself and give them a piece of my mind and wanting to wrap my arms around Joe and never let go.

I settled on wrapping my arms around Joe, deciding that I could do no good. "I'm sorry." I whispered, "I'm so sorry."

"I went in and the men were waiting for me. They told me to go outside. My own dad escorted me out. Told me I wasn't welcome there if it was true. Michelle told my mum all about us. Apparently they are both upset about it."

I knew she liked him! This wasn't the time to bring that up so I just pulled Joe closer to me in hopes it brought him some comfort. "I'm so sorry." I repeat not sure what I can say.

"I'm not going back home. They don't want me."

"You have to! Where else can you go? And of course they want you, they're just emotional."

He shrugged, he didn't seem to care.

"Joe.." I said running a hand through his hair so that he'd look at me, "you have to go home."

He didn't say anything just sat with me. I decided not to push it. He'd calm down and come to his senses eventually.

Joe stayed at my house for dinner that night then we left the house with Ethan. When Ethan went to meet up with James, Joe and I hung back just walking the streets together. He still seemed really upset.

"I just want to get away." He said eventually, "it's all too much."

The word 'all' echoed through my mind, did he mean I was too much too? I had to remind myself this wasn't about me. I just had to be here for him.

"Where could you go?" I tried to rationalise.

"Anywhere." He shrugged, "we could run away together."

I laughed, I couldn't help it, "and what? Live in a field somewhere? We don't have any money! Besides Joe I don't want to run away from my family."

"I know." He sighed. I was glad he didn't push it.

"You're not going to disappear are you?" I was worried now he'd just run away by himself.

He hesitated, "no."

"Please don't. I don't know what I'd do." I admit.

"Maybe I can just find a field near by?" He was joking now.

"That could work," I joked back, "know of any good ones? I'm not coming to visit you if you don't have a decent field."

"Oh Olivia," he surprised me by picking me up and spinning me around before planting me back on my feet, "no field is good enough for you."

I laughed, "is that suppose to be sweet?" I asked.

He shrugged with a smirk and kept walking.

We kept walking and talking until late at night.

"I better bring you home or your dad will have my head."

"Promise me you'll go home after." I looked straight into his eyes to make sure he didn't lie to me.

"I promise." He held out his pinky finger and I took it in mine before bringing it up to my face and giving it a kiss.
