"So son," Grandpa turned to Joe.

"Grandpa!" I protested trying to pull Joe away. He stayed put.

"How long have you been with my Olivia?" He asked Joe.

"4 months." Joe looked at me. I nodded.

Grandpa continued to ask Joe questions about himself and about us until mum cut in, "that's enough dad," she said, "leave the poor boy alone."

"Thank you." I said embarrassed.

"I was just getting to know him!" Grandpa said defensively.

"You don't need to interview him." Granny said she then winked at me, "it seems he already has the position."

"We're leaving." I announce standing up and taking Joes hand so he'll leave with me.

"Where do you think you're going?" Mum asked. She wouldn't let me have Joe in my room.

"Just in the front room." I said walking out.

"Sorry." I said to Joe once we sat down on the sofas.

He laughed and pulled me closer to him, "they just care about you. It's good."

"I don't think grandpa really needed to know what you intend to do with your whole life though."

"Maybe not." Joe admitted.

"Is what you told him true?" I was curious, "or is that just what you tell the grown ups."

He looked around like he was going to say something very top secret and then got very close, "well to tell you the truth," he whispered, I found myself leaning closer to him, "what I really want to be in a fireman, but I don't think there's much money in that so I'll probably do banking instead."

I leaned back and looked at him. I couldn't for the life of me tell if he was being serious. "Are you serious?" I asked, "if that's what you actually want to do, then that's what you should do."

He shrugged, "well yeah but I also want a nice big house and a nice car and a comfortable life for me and my wife and any children we might have. And you need a lot of money for that."

"Hear me out on this one? Your wife, if she's a good person that is, and good for you of course. Might want what's best for you and want you to be happy more than she cares about money." I shrugged, "it's just an idea."

"Yeah, who knows really."

"You should do what you want to do." I told him seriously.

"I will." He nodded, "what do you want to do?" He asked me.

I hadn't thought much about it, "I don't really know to be honest."

"Do you think you'll go to university after school?"

I thought about it, "yeah." I decided, "I want to do that."

"Me too." He nodded, "what will you study?"

"I have no idea." I laughed, "what even can you study!"

"Anything! I think I'll do something with maths. Accounting maybe. Or finance."

"Yeah." I nodded, "that doesn't sound too bad. I'm as good at maths as you are."

There was a knock on the front door.

"That'll be Carol and Joanne."

We went to answer the door.

Carol, Joanne and Dave were all there.

Carol and Joanne were very excited about the house.

Joanne dropped back as the adults walked towards the kitchen, "I think mums going to buy it!" She whispered to us before we all followed into the kitchen.
