3rd Person POV

= Waverider, Earth =

Ava was walking around the ship when a sound from Brooklyn's room made her stop in her tracks. She turns her head in confusion. As far as she knew, Maddie had cried herself to sleep (once again) and the toddler was rarely awake and not in tears these days

Ava diverts from her original path to the parlor and makes her way to Brooklyn's room slowly. She slowly creeps up to the open doorway and peaks in. And what she sees in the room causes her to let out a small sad sigh

Mick is sitting on Brooklyn's bed, staring at the floor under his feet and holding an oversized shirt in his hands, a shirt Ava was sure she had seen Brooklyn wear when she was pregnant

"Mick?" Ava asks softly, cutting through the silence of the room

Mick looks up quickly, swipes at his face and tosses the shirt onto the bed. "What do you need, Cap?" He questions

"I just wanted to know if you were alright?" Ava asks, taking a step into the room

"Sara and Brooke are still missing." Mick says

"That's not what I asked." Ava tells him softly, taking a seat on Brooklyn's bed next to him. "I want to know if you are okay."

"No." Mick says in a whisper. "You wanna know something ridiculous? When we were all first recruited for these ridiculous missions...I wasn't friends with either of the girls. But then as time went on..." He sighs. "I don't know...somehow Brooke made her way into my heart and this shirt..." He says, grabbing the shirt that he tossed. "Well, it was one of the first shirts she wore when her belly was getting too big for her clothes."

"I remember." Ava says

"It's my shirt." Mick tells her

"I...I didn't know that..." Ava says

"Brooke's belly was getting bigger and her shirts weren't fitting." Mick begins to tell the story. "She wanted one of Oliver's or Jax's shirts to wear but we were on missions and weren't going to be able to get to Star City or Central City for a while. I gave her one of my shirts to borrow and...it was so big on her." He says with a sad smile, looking at the shirt in his hands. "Even with her growing belly it was big on her. I gave it to her to hold her over, just until we could get to one of the cities and she could get some new shirts from Oliver or Jax but then...then she asked for another one. And another. And another. And then I realized that it wasn't about the shirt...it was about her feeling safe. She wanted a shirt from Oliver or Jax because they made her feel safe. But when she asked for another shirt from me...I knew that she felt safe with me." He looks at Ava. "We formed a sibling relationship years back, from bickering and name calling to...to fighting for each other and protecting each other. I love her. I just...I want her back so bad..." He trails off in a whisper

"I know." Ava whispers, putting a hand on Mick's shoulder. "I know."

"I feel like I can't protect her..." Mick whispers hopelessly, showing more vulnerability in this moment than he ever has in his life
