Ok, so, there aren't too many rules. Basically, just create cool characters that you love and don't be mean to anyone else. I would love to see some diversity, and not just in sexuality and gender. You can do different ethnicities, races, religions, disabilities, physical attributes, looks. Also, remember: your character doesn't have to have a difference! If everyone's character had a difference then, well, it wouldn't be so "different" anymore, would it? That's pretty much it I guess...
