ROSEANNE SILENTLY ROLLED a single tiny green pea with her fork. She checked what Jimin was doing with her peripheral vision and noticed that he was chowing down on the medium well-done steak his mother prepared. She then glanced in front of her catching Jimin's younger brother Wooyoung doing the same.
"So how's school going for everyone?" Jimin's mother, Heather, suddenly asked trying to make everyone comfortable with the dinner they planned weeks ago.
Roseanne raised her head turning to Ms. Anderson, "Oh um... great. I mean classes this year seem a bit more manageable." She replied with a polite smile.
Ms. Anderson nodded her head, "Anything exciting happened for you Wooyoung?" She asked her youngest.
Wooyoung halted mid-way from chewing on his piece of steak. "I saw Nancy slam her head on her desk this week." He nonchalantly said before returning to eating his food.
Ms. Anderson clicked her tongue unhappy with her son's lack of empathy toward the probably distressed girl. "That wasn't nice. I thought you and Nancy got along quite well. Aren't you two friends?"
Wooyoung shrugged, "That was in elementary school." He retorted stabbing his mashed potatoes with his fork. He did miss hanging out with her but childhood friends always tend to grow apart as they grow up and they weren't an exemption to that fact.
"And you Jimin, how's school?"
Jimin put down the glass of water he was drinking. "Fine." His answer was short and quick not allowing for any discussion about his school life. "Why is he here? You said this was just going to be us." He remarked throwing harsh glares at the man who sat beside his mom.
Ms. Anderson wasn't too pleased with Jimin's attitude but she knew he was never too fond of his presence. She sighed wishing her son was more open and accepting of the man she currently loved. So instead of beating around the bush, she decided to make her long-awaited announcement now.
She cleared her throat catching the attention of everyone. "I know and I'm sorry for lying but we have something really important to tell you two." She spoke her voice went up in volume due to her excitement. Ms. Anderson intertwined her hand with her boyfriend, Ryan's.
He smiled noticing the sheer happiness of the woman he cherished. He turned toward her two boys and Roseanne who patiently waited for them to continue speaking. "I proposed to Heather and she said yes." He revealed as Ms. Anderson couldn't help herself and show the dazzling ring on her once vacant ring finger.
Silence.
Both Jimin and Wooyoung felt their hearts get caught in their throats once their eyes met with the ring. This was it. This was the day their mother officially moved on from their biological father.
