"You still awake?..." Chuuya asked quietly, not daring to move his hand. He was afraid that he'd only dream Dazai was here, like he had with Kouyo.
  Dazai responded, "yes."
Chuuya wasn't sure what to say next. He just didn't like the idea of being awake and alone.
  "What is it?" Dazai asked.
Chuuya heaved a sighed, "it's nothing."
The whole time Dazai had been here, which was a good amount of hours by now, there had been a weird tenseness in the air. Elise had gone off to bed a good while ago as well. So it was just the two of them.
"Alright, time to test again," Dazai said, breaking Chuuya's thoughts.
Chuuya lifted his eyes to look at him as Dazai let go. Chuuya slowly felt his eyes begin to focus and he could see Dazai as crisp as he used to be able to for a few seconds.
"Was that any better?" Dazai asked as he took Chuuya's hand again.
Chuuya shook his head, "not really." He leaned farther back against the headboard.
He felt the bed dip as Dazai sat down next to him.
"What time is it?" Chuuya asked as he moved away, a little uncomfortable with the closeness.
"Uhm," Dazai paused, "just past midnight, now."
  Chuuya nodded, "okay..."
"Chuuya is there something you want to say to me?" Dazai asked out of the blue.
  "What?"
"You just seem to want to say something," Dazai shrugged.
"I don't think so..." Chuuya said slowly.
"Did you really forget what I sounded like?..." Dazai asked.
Chuuya paused, "not just you... I'd forgotten... everything..."
He felt Dazai tighten his grip a little bit, "do you know why?"
Chuuya shook his head, "I have no idea... I've been really out of it lately..."
"I guess it's just something that comes with making crazy adjustments like this..." Dazai said, moving closer.
"Quit getting so close to me," Chuuya moved away again.
"But your so warm and it's so cold over here," he whined, scooting closer again.
"Stay on your side," Chuuya pushed him.
Dazai laughed lightly before moving back, "okay."
Chuuya sighed, this was going to be a long night.
"Has being away from your job driven you crazy yet?" Dazai asked.
Chuuya groaned, "don't remind me... I kept thinking about how everything must being falling apart without me..."
Dazai snickered, "I bet they are."
Chuuya sighed again, "...I really hope this works..."
"I do, too," Dazai said quietly as he squeezed Chuuya's hand.
"Wouldn't it be more convenient for your agency if I wasn't able to see?" Chuuya asked.
Dazai paused, "well... I guess so, yeah."
"Then why are you here?" Chuuya asked.
  "I'm getting paid."
"Of course you are..." Chuuya grumbled.
Dazai chuckled, "yup. ...You should go to sleep."
"No," Chuuya said, "to be frank, I don't trust you."
  "Ohh~ Chuuya's so dirty minded~"
"That's not what I meant and you know it," Chuuya said through his teeth.
Dazai squeezed Chuuya's hand, holding back a laugh, "I know. Sorry, sorry."
Chuuya sighed, "you never get any less annoying every time I see you."
Dazai leaned his head on Chuuya's shoulder, "and you never get any less hot-tempered."
"Hey, I told you to stay on your-"
"Fine." Dazai sat back up with a sigh.

——

Not too much later did Chuuya start nodding off.
"So much for staying up," Dazai chuckled as he held Chuuya's hand a little tighter.
Chuuya mumbled something, barely even moving his lips.
"Hm?" Dazai leaned a bit closer, "what'd you say?"
Chuuya didn't even try to speak again. He just grumbled and pushed Dazai away.
"Well, at least your spatial awareness is a lot better," Dazai laughed to himself.
Chuuya slumped down against the back of the bed, listing to the side.
Dazai sighed, smiling, "come here." Dazai moved closer and pulled Chuuya to lean on him.
"Nooooooo," Chuuya whispered as he braced his hands against Dazai to get back up.
"If you aren't going to lay down, this is your only other option." Dazai put his hand on the back of Chuuya's head, keeping him still. "So says me."
Chuuya didn't move. Dazai was pretty sure he was too tired to fight back.
Chuuya dropped his arms and gave in to laying against Dazai. Then, whispered, "you aren't comfortable at all..."
Dazai almost let out a laugh, "hey, I gave you another option."
Chuuya sighed, "too tired to move..."
"Then deal with it," Dazai rubbed Chuuya's arm.
Not long after, Chuuya's breathing slowed as he fell asleep.
Dazai laid his head against Chuuya's, raking his fingers through the other's hair. As he did, the smell of peach flowers filled his senses.
He smiled to himself, "Kouyo never fails to surprise me..."
After a while, Dazai carefully laid Chuuya down and covered him in the blankets. He, then, took off his coat before laying down next to him.
Dazai took Chuuya's hand again, holding it gently.
He looked up to Chuuya's face, searching for anything to give away what he might be dreaming about.
Again, he was met with the question of: did Chuuya even dream? Sometimes it was hard to remember that Chuuya wasn't human... Dazai had always thought of Chuuya as more human than himself...
Dazai reached his hand out and brushed some of Chuuya's hair aside so it wouldn't obstruct his face. This led him to wonder if Chuuya's body was a manifestation or a vessel he stole.
Either way, it was still Chuuya.
He sighed quietly to himself, resting his hand against Chuuya's cheek.
Now that he thought about it, Chuuya never seemed to get scars, either.
Dazai found himself gently caressing Chuuya with his thumb. He pulled his hand back, unsure of himself. He never really got opportunities like this. To see Chuuya completely calm and serene.
It felt wrong to be touching him when he was sleeping, though.
So Dazai settled for just being with him, occasionally squeezing and rubbing Chuuya's hand.
