No matter the relationship; whether within family, or outside, respect forms the essence and focal aspect of it all. In absence of the core foundation of respect; no relationship can thrive, no matter how significant they claim love is.
That said, while respect is one of the most difficult things to earn, at the same time it is something people forego very easily in face of love.
The need is to remember that you yourself set the bar of how you permit someone to treat you. By tolerating disrespect, overlooking ridicule and easily forgiving people for stepping over your limits; you quietly convey that you're okay with being treated in whatever manner they see fit.
Take back control of your honour. Stop putting the power in someone else's hand of that which Allah has blessed you with. Give respect and demand respect. It is your right. And of every creation of Allah.
