I woke up to a text from Arlene, the wanna-be mob ended up not being as wanna-be as I had hoped...

I drove to the house, police and ambulances and firetrucks all over. The house was completely destroyed, as with everyone in it, I feared.

I walked up to the scene and over-heard two first responders talking,

M1: "Special of the day, country fried vampire."

M2: "This'll take the heat off them having to find out who's  killing those women."

M1: "Oh yeah."

I nearly ran to where Sheriff Dearborne and Deputy Bellfluer were standing,

"Was Bill in there?"

D: "No way of knowin'."

B: "They're awful messy, but there was four of 'em."

I saw them carry out four coffins... They hit them while they were sleeping, no way of them being able to escape.

D: "Kym, you okay? You want some water?"

I was frozen, just staring at the house, "I'm fine... you're sure there were four bodies?"

B: "We shouldn't even be telling you this."

"Please, not now. Not with me."

He sighed, "There's four sets of remains inside four coffins."

I wanted to cry, there was no way Bill was really dead... was there?

I left the scene without a word.

I ended up going to Sam's, not really wanting to be alone. He opened the door and wrapped me in a hug,

"I heard about the fire. I'm real, real sorry. You okay?"

"I'm okay, I think. I'm just tired of losing people, you know?"

"Yeah..." he hugged me again, "Look, I know I have my... feelings about Bill. But I know he was your friend so, I'm here for you, chere."

"Thank you." I smiled, we moved to the couch and watched tv before calling it a night.

We woke up a few hours later to banging on the door. We scrambled out of bed, expecting to hear that somebody else died.

He pulled his pants on, "Stay here."

I scoffed, "Yeah, right."

I was right over his shoulder as he opened the door,

"Bill?" my jaw dropped and I felt Sam tense slightly.

B: "I went to your home and you were not there."

"Yeah, I came here... wha- I thought you were dead."

B: "I got your message so I went to ground in the cemetery."

"Well," I gave him a quick hug, "I'm glad you're okay. Um... goodnight, Bill."

"Goodnight, Kymberly." he gave a nod as he turned and walked off the porch.

S: "He lives."

"Don't be rude."

He threw his hands up, "I didn't say anything."

"You didn't have to."

"Come on, let's get back to bed."

"You read my mind."

He kissed my forehead as we turned back for his bed.
