I smile widely at Dan, waving my hand in greeting. I see him blow me a kiss, followed by the sound of the snap through the earpiece. " Stay careful and keep your eyes open all the time." He closes and opens the fingers of his hand, before whispering a quivering, "Hello..." due to intense concern. I'm sorry to see him so worried about us, stuck in that car and unable to help us out, but it couldn't be any other way.

I disconnect the camera, pressing on the red "End Call" button and sighing sadly as I put the phone back into my pocket.

You can rest assured Dan; we will soon be back safe and sound, along with our dear Hannah.

I remove the earbud from my ear, handing it back to Jessy, who walks silently by my side. As soon as I meet her gaze, I move my lips to mimic the word: "Thank you." I watch her smile back at me, then show me her right thumb upward.

Well, now it's better to remain completely focused on the surroundings.

We walk a few more steps, shrouded in absolute silence. Fortunately, there is a lot of light coming in through the windows; we are no longer in the dark as before, or I would have died of a heart attack.

Abruptly, both Jake and Phil stop suddenly, standing completely still. They both extend an arm backward, outstretched, palm facing us. This is an unmistakable signal, meant to intimate us to stay back. I sharpen my eyesight, searching with my gaze what is the cause of such imposition.

There are two doors.

One is on the left side, while the other is located on the right side; they seem to mirror each other and are totally identical: same weather-blackened wood, pitted by woodworms over several years.

Surely, these are two of the small rooms mentioned earlier by Jake.

Do they want to scour the inside?

Jake waves for Phil to approach him, who in response jumps to attention, bringing himself behind his back. I hold my breath as soon as Jake places his hand on the door handle, lowering it down to open it.

No reaction from them.
I see them narrow their gaze, sliding it far and wide to square the room, only to close it again after a few seconds.

It must be an empty compartment, like the little room we broke in from.

They move to the one on the right, repeating the same gestures they just made; and here again, after a few seconds of examination, I realize that nothing has attracted their attention. They walk in our direction, covering the few meters that separate us, shaking their heads.

"The rooms are completely empty." Phil comments in a whisper, responding to the questioning look I give them. He tightens his shoulders. "Undoubtedly, it is better that way."

We all nod our heads, agreeing with his words.

"There are six more rooms like these just ahead." Jake affirms, pointing to the hallway that continues straight ahead. "I think we should check those as well, although the chances of Hannah being in one of those rooms are quite low."

"I agree, better to remove all doubt." I speak softly. "It should only take us a few minutes to inspect them all anyway."

The rest of the group also assents to Jake's proposal, simply saying yes with a firm movement of their heads. We quickly get back on the road, and as we pass in front of the room we just searched, since they have not closed the door again, I take a glance to look inside. It is completely bare, with only large wall debris scattered on the rough concrete floor.
