Chapter 11
Nash - May
I'm here.
I'm in Hudson, Ohio.
And right now, I want to flee. Yes, I want to run like a f*cking baby.
And I especially don't want Carter to come along. All she's been doing is complaining - complaining about the wedding being too small, complaining about the food, complaining about the reception. She's being nice to everyone I introduce to her, but she hasn't left my side.
At all.
And let me tell you, a dude needs his d*mn space.
I can't run, though. I promised Mel and Dan that I would sing at their wedding.
So I am.
I get up on stage with the rest of my band - minus Dan - and test the microphone. It's been a while since we've played together, but it feels good to be back on a stage. I murmur the song that I choose to sing and the band starts with the soft rhythm.
"And don't go to bed yet love, I think it's too early,
And we just need a little time to ourselves.
If my wall clock tells me that it's 4 in the morning I'll give it h*ll."
I haven't seen her yet. Maybe she's not here. Maybe she decided not to come. Or maybe she's avoiding you.
My eyes roam the crowd, watching every face turn toward me. Couples are dancing on the dance floor, slowly moving to the beat of the music.
"Cause I've been trying way too long,
To try and be the perfect song.
When our hearts are heavy burdens,
We shouldn't have to bear alone."
I close my eyes, getting lost in the music.
My fingers strum the strings with ease. I haven't played in what feels like forever, yet the chords seem effortless - like breathing air. As the chorus of the song comes up, I open my eyes.
And my heart stops when I see her.
She's the first person I see - the only person I can see.
My eyes roam her body, praying that she isn't just a figment of my imagination. Her, now short, blonde hair falls against the top of her collarbones in waves. The lavender dress blends with her tan, smooth skin, a hint of cleavage skimming out of the top. Her stark, green eyes stand out against the moonlight as I lock eyes with her.
She's beautiful. She's flawless. She's f*cking perfect.
The words of the song unconsciously flow out of my mouth as I continue to stare at her.
"So goodnight moon and goodnight you,
When you're all that I think about.
All that I dream about,
How'd I ever breathe without.
A goodnight kiss from goodnight you,
The kind of hope they all talk about.
The kind of feeling we sing about,
Sit in our bedroom and read aloud,
Like a passage from goodnight moon."
