It was a dark and stormy night.

That's the way I used to write;

cliché phrases that were never worth a dime.

Then I found in my thesaurus

synonyms that would not bore us

and now my stories stand the test of time.

I'm an author of acclaim

signing books with just my name

accepting all the plaudits as my due.

Then came a sudden shock

when I encountered writer's block

with absolutely no idea what to do.

The words beforehand manufactured

with an ease once well rehearsed

had now deserted me and taken rapid flight.

Consequently desperation

sought to save my reputation

with the phrase: It was a dark and stormy night.
