Beguiled

The result of just feeling a little melancholy

She said you are my only lover

yet in her eyes we see the guile

She said there'll never be another

but the teasing lie is in her smile

She says you really are the best

the others can't compare

we are no better than the rest

her mendacity shows there

She wields a power spun from some primeval source and we knuckle down before it helpless in its might knowing hopelessly there's no recourse except to sate heart's shameless appetite

It's a game to her and we all play

pretending that we know the rules

until that unsuspecting day

she plays us all for silly fools

And with a goodbye wave most cavalier

she'll waltz away without concern

past flattery spent and insincere

leaving behind a dream of her return

We secretly deny the glaring truth

that we were not the one

surrendering to callow youth

and reality that would never be won

That girl, once upon a time in school, who just blew you away
