Silas POV

"Come on Jay, please!" I beg my big brother.

It's been almost a year and I can speak to my entire family. The mind link helped because when ever I got stuck on a word I could ask for help and didn't have to rely on Jay to interpret for me.

"No pup, go play." He tells me and I growl. "Cute but no. I have work to do."

I storm off to find someone else who will listen to me.

"Oh, Paaaul!" I call out going for the second oldest.

"Oh, whaaat?" He responds from the kitchen and I run in there.

"Go for a run with me?" I ask and he shakes his head as he finishes making a sandwich.

"No can do baby brother. I got patrol. Maybe later tonight?" He suggests ruffling my hair as he leaves, eating his sandwich.

"Levi! Theo!" I call the twins and see Levi walking down the stairs.

"Theo is out with Lee. Something about needing new shoes and I have a date so what ever you are yelling about will have to wait. Sorry pup." He says giving my hair the same treatment as Paul.

This sucks! I'm rarely on my own. Even after I was changed and my heart was fixed my family makes a point to have someone taking care of me. I guess I finally hit the point where I'm one of the pups not the fragile little boy they took in. It's a good thing, really... except I want to go for a run!

"Avery!" I whine loudly as a last resort. I don't get an answer and run up to his room to find it empty. I guess he already left.

"Now what?" I grumble to myself. I can feel the wolf in me dying to get out. He wants to be free and I'm gonna let him. So what if I'm tot supposed to go out on my own. Everyone else is busy and I don't want to sit around the house all day! I've done enough of that for a lifetime.

I run out the back door and into the woods before shifting. I shake out my fur with a sigh. That's more like it!

I take off running feeling the freedom only a wolf can know. The dirt squishes under my paws due to yesterday's rain storm. The fresh smell in the air makes me take deep lung fulls as I jump over fallen trees and weave between bushes and boughs. This is the life.

"Hey human!" I hear through the mind link as a wolf jumps in front of me. "What are you doing out here without a keeper? You're not a real wolf. How will you make it without the Gamma family protecting you?" He taunts and I turn the other way not interested in fighting with him only to see three more boys from the pack.

"What you gonna run away?" One of the other boys joins in. "And you're supposed to be a Gamma's kid?" I hear them all laugh in my head.

"I guess adoption can't make a weak human into a real wolf." One of them says.

"Yeah, he's just a mutt!"

I don't wait around for more insults. As soon as I see a hole I take it, bolting between two of the young wolves.

"Get him!" I hear followed by paws hitting earth. I am too fast for them to catch but the way they run forces me to go in one direction. After a while I stop dead in my tracks.

"Go on, cross." A boy links panting.

"Alpha will have your hide for leaving the territory."

"Or he might just kick him out." One suggests. "Can't have weak blood."

I growl facing them. Uncle Scott, as I have been told to call him, told me to never leave pack lands. He said it was dangerous and anything that an Alpha wolf considers dangerous has to be worse than there jerks. No way am I crossing the boarder.

My growl is quickly overshadowed by a louder growl sounding behind me. The guys around me look scared to death as they turn tail and run. I turn around and see a massive dirty rabid looking wolf with red eyes.

I know this wolf isn't pack. I have a feeling in my guts that this beast will harm my family, my pack.

"Alpha, I need your help." I link Uncle Scott along with a picture of the wolf.

"Silas, get out of there!" He quickly responds and I hear a howl in the distance coming from the direction of the pack house.

I turn to run but am grabbed by my scruff and thrown. My paws scrape the ground as I try to catch myself. It's obvious I won't be outrunning this wolf and the beast inside of me is urging me to stand my ground. The only feeling coming from that side of me is the need to defend my family. This wolf can't get through.

I growl at the wolf and it's head tilts looking confused or amused. Not sure which, maybe both. He lunges at me and I jump to the side with a startled "yip!" He turns to me looking angry that he didn't get me. He jumps at me again and I duck. On instinct I slash my claws at his back leg as he soars over me.

The wolf yelps and growls charging again. Before he can touch me another wolf plows into the scary wolf's side. The pack wolf fights the other one for a minute or so before three more warrior wolves come to help. It takes no time before the sorry wolf is dead.

"Silas!" I hear and look to see Uncle Scott running over in only shorts. "You okay, pup?" I nod but he seems unconvinced. "Can you shift for me? We got the doc coming to check on you." I shift

"I'm fine, Uncle Scott. I dodged him when ever he attacked." I tell him.

"More than that. The rogue was limping when I got here." A man says. He must have been the first wolf to come help.

"Why didn't you run?" Uncle Scott growls.

"I tried but he was bigger and could have hurt the pack!" I argue without even thinking of my answer.

"Here little warrior." One of the other wolves says handing me a hoodie that would be a dress on me.

"Appropriate for our little protector." Another warrior says ruffling my hair. "Ya did good, pup."

"Come on Si, your mom has my head buzzing with how much she's been linking me. I'm proud of how well you handled yourself but you're in for it when you get home." Uncle Scott says leading me home.

"Silas! You know better than going out alone!"

Yeah I'm in trouble.
