The reason he fidgeted with them was because they reminded him of his current position. The cool metal against his skin reminded him that he was no longer the weak, powerless child from the past. He was now stronger and richer.
When he was nervous or irritated, he fidgeted with them to remind himself to keep calm. He reminded himself to be rational and think his decisions through. He reminded himself to be careful as to not lose his empire.
