The cashier made eye contact with me, seeing me somewhat coming toward the register with my items. I had to do this transaction if I was going to stop stealing and actually start acting like a normal human being.
I looked away for a moment, and took a breath.
"Are you ready to pay this time?"
Something made me panic and run out the door instead.
As soon as I was outside, I knew it was a stupid move. My heart was slamming into my chest with terror.
I knew the smart thing to do would be to turn around, and pay for the snacks I had in my hand. Or I could ask Emily or Mia to come back with me to pay, but I couldn't deal with the shame.
Instead, I kept running until I got to the building Emily's new class was in. She had decided to take up learning Italian with Quinn, so she was busy in there for another hour.
I didn't know what else to do, so I waited on the bench near her classroom. I managed to calm myself down eventually, but I was scared to walk out alone in the case that campus security would be waiting.
Suddenly, I noticed Emily erupt from the class.
"Hey Sare, everything okay?" She asked, seeming a bit nervous as well as she approached.
