Chasing Down A Daydream

A week since your confession had passed, both of you treated each other no differently. Everyone in town busied themselves, preparing for Día de las Velitas, which in English, translates to the Day of the Little Candles or Little Candles Day.

It was also known as Noche de las Velitas, which meant the Night of the Little Candles. It was one or the other. But the purpose was all the same. On December 7th, each household in the village prepares little candles on the streets to light them up at sunset.

They decorate the houses, thousands all over, and if one were to view the town from a mile away, how it glowed beautifully, illuminating the night. There were times competitions were held for the most beautifully decorated homes and the most marvelous light displays.

You were free to decorate whichever part of your home, from the streets and sidewalk, all the way to your porch and balcony, or even your windowsills. Cafés, diners, restaurants, the park, the church, and all the open small shops; each one was decorated, creating tunnels of light in the town to honor the Catholic Immaculate Conception the following day.

If you pleased, one could even light paper lanterns to make it all the more enchanting.

Holding a lot of candles and lanterns with her vines, Isabela lifts herself along with you by the exterior windowsills of Casita. It had first made you uncomfortable, but you slowly grew to enjoy it, especially feeling the wind blow gently.

"You know, I was never able to do this back then. We never celebrated anything- well no. We celebrated the birthdays of the dictators. But that's about it." You shake your head in annoyance as you're reminded of it.

Turning away from the windowsill, at the height you were in, you could see everyone working together to decorate the entire town.

Isabela takes your hand in hers, a gentle smile as she rubs her thumb against the back of it. "It won't be the last. We'll do so much more together from now on, even all the things you weren't able to do back then."

You turn to her, seeing the sincerity in her eyes. It was something you always wanted to turn away from in the past, it made you uncomfortable seeing someone with such raw and genuine emotions without any pretense.

But now all it did was draw you into her even more. "I'm sure it won't. There's no one else I'd rather be with."

"Say... at sunset, can you meet me at my rooftop garden? I want you to see the view. It'll blow you away." She whispers, her eyes dancing with excitement.

You reflect her smile, almost unable to wait for sunset. "You know I'll be there."

You spent the rest of the morning decorating casita with lights, almost every inch of it ready to glow even more than it already was with its magic.

As the afternoon came along, a band started playing music in the town square, making sure a concert is up and running when people gather for sunset.

"I want everyone to be in the town square, ready to help if anything happens, okay? Don't forget that people can get plenty rowdy from excitement at such an important celebration." Abuela reminds everyone gathered at the table.

After acknowledging it, everyone disperses to their own groups, Isabela winking at you playfully before taking off, making you laugh.

Making your way around town, you sightsee all the decorations and displays they've set up even if they aren't lit yet. But just seeing it helped you imagine how it would've looked.

Coming across the same cafe Maria and her mamá owned, they step outside at the exact moment you were about to pass. "Oh! Mija, you're really here! I thought Maria was being delusional..." She whispers in a comedic tone as she nudges her daughter.
