Part 18, sacrifice

Butch's POV:

Sitting against a tree playing with my old lighter by flicking it off and on, then I stop, my ears twitch as I hear a faint noise,

Butch: is that whistling?

Standing up I look up into the sky, then it clicks in my mind,

Butch: Everybody down!

I shout as I jump a hit the ground covering my head, just as a mortar shell hit the ground no more than fifty feet away from me, completely destroying a tree and sending splinters flying everywhere, more shells start landing causing more damage, I try looking around and manage to see the others, I see Sam and her sister hiding under the SUV, but looking more I see Varren out in the open holding his leg,

I don't really think much, I just act, I get up and run to him, it's extremely dangerous what I'm doing, running through a mortar barrage is dangerous enough but inside a forest is worse as the shells hit trees and cause them to splinter like shrapnel, but I manage to make it to Varren without injury, picking him up, I carry him to the others,

Butch: ha!

Varren: what?

Butch: it's nothing just hang on

Getting to the SUV, I lay him down and roll him under it, then look around as the barrage ends,

I start walking to try and find Kelly and Arthur but stumble to my knees but catch myself before falling down completely, not good, but it doesn't matter, only they do,

Arthur's POV:

The bombardment has stopped, I reach for my arm and rip out the chunk of wood that hit me, then I check on Kelly,

Arthur: you okay?

Kelly: y-yeah I think, what was that?

Arthur: a mortar barrage, guess they found us, we got to find the others and get out of here quickly

Kelly: Okay

We get up and rush to find the others, we find Butch first hunched over next to a tree,

Arthur: are you okay

Butch: I'm fine, Varren took a piece to his leg

Kelly: I'm on it

Kelly then runs on ahead, I go to join her but am stopped by Butch as he nearly falls down, I catch him before he does though,

Arthur: are you okay?

I then pull my hand away from his back and see it's covered in blood, I then give him a worried look,

Butch: I'm fine, don't tell Kelly

Arthur: you sure about this?

He just nods, then pulls himself up and starts walking back to the others, I follow to make sure he's alright,

We get to the others and find Kelly bandaging Varren's leg,

Kelly: you'll be fine, anyone else injured

Sam: no

Jenny: I'm fine

Arthur: just a flesh wound

I then glanced at Butch,

Butch: don't worry about me

Arthur: okay, we need to leave before another barrage comes or they show up

Sam: on it, Jenny, help me get Varren into the car

Jenny: got it
