Memories work like acid, burning away my insides,
Making me lurch forward in agony;
Hard bitten lips gasp, struggling to breathe.

I try to bear the pain your presence provokes;
The melancholy thoughts you put in my head,
While my heart itself sighs, and begs my eyes to cry.

I force a smile and ignore the nausea inside,
As if somehow, that would make it go away.
I briefly close my eyes, to shut away memories,
But darkness has never felt more desolate.
