Chapter Forty-One

Carlson taught her to wield her emotions while sparring, though she was not a very good fighter. It was too hard not to overthink it. She got thrown off when her sparring partner interrupted her planned moves. Still, she was sleeping better.

While Simon was away with Owen checking on the animals and scouting the estate, Hugh would shift and she'd try to make him feel sleepy or happy. She tried to be faithful to all the emotions at her disposal, but she didn't like the memory of tears on Hugh's cheeks after she'd gotten lost in sadness. She liked the idea of turning a threat into something sweet, anyway. So joy, fatigue, peace, and others like it became the weapons in her arsenal.

Spring turned to summer, bringing with it pleasant temperatures and long days. Owen's sisters taught her to make flower crowns and Hugh made plans for Hannah and Constance's mother and grandmother to come to Carnsley.
