The Kingdom of Duat

The Egyptian Afterworld used to be one large city in the center of a desert. The spirits of the world would travel through that dessert to reach Duat to seek an audience with Osiris and determine where their mortal souls would rest.

Over time Duat split into two realms.

The first, Amenthes, the city of gold, was where the higher gods resided. There Osiris built his temple where his family resided, and those who worshipped him could live under it's shadow.

The second kept the name Duat, and became the Kingdom of the Dead. There, the people who worshipped gods others then the ones residing in Amenthes could dwell, if deemed worthy. This Kingdom was given to Osiris' brother to rule.

Set, god of chaos and darkness. And with him on the throne, the city became as dark and twisted as him.
