melina sighed, shutting off her phone. clearly, izzy and madi were no help. as she sat in the second row to the left, she shook her leg nervously, dreading the prospect of having a partner for who knows how long.

ms. lee was currently writing more of the agenda on the board when she walked out of the classroom. there were at least thirteen students in the class, including matt, who still hadn't shown up. melina grinned; he was obviously still held up with mrs. keolf.

she lifted her head from the desk when she heard the door open. it was matt, scurrying toward her desk. melina scoffed, leaning her body toward the empty seat beside her. "nuh uh," she said, shaking her head and putting her legs on the chair to block his way.

"find a different seat; this one is clearly taken," she added, tossing her backpack onto the desk. matt glared at her, grabbing the backpack and pushing it off the desk. the thud made a red-haired girl sitting a few feet away in the last row look over at them.

"not anymore it's not. move," matt replied, grabbing the chair with a loud screech as melina's legs fell back to the ground. he sat down with a sigh. instead of engaging him, melina rested her head back on the desk.

after a few seconds, melina turned to the girl who had looked up earlier and said loudly, "i suggest you keep your distance from him; he's negativity in human form!" the girl's eyes widened. "thanks for the heads up," she laughed, returning to her book.

"watch out for her too; if you get close enough she'll get all up in your business and might spread it around the school." matt said impulsively, then noticed melina's smile drop. she stared at him seriously. "i think you forgot, but i'm not josie. although that's a little brave of you to say, considering you're apparently a "bad kisser."

the red-haired girl was no longer focused on her book and was now listening in on the bickering going on in front of her.

before matt could respond, ms. lee walked back into the classroom. "welcome to intro to sociology! i hope you all are ready to see a new perspective on each other." the red-haired girl raised her hand. "what specific sociological themes are we working on?"

ms. lee smiled. "thank you for participating...?"

the girl nodded and smiled. "oh, um, layla."

the teacher gave her a thumbs up. "yes, layla, thank you!" she laughed. "we're going to work on dyad sociology, where i will pair you two together to learn more about how your relationship either crashes or connects. we'll really get into each other's minds," ms. lee explained to the class. melina was intrigued.

"the list of partners will be posted on the wall outside; you can go look at it after class," the teacher added, turning to face the board. "okay, onto icebreakers! who wants to start?"

melina held in her groan and heard matt speak up, raising his hand. "my friend melina here would like to go first."

"oh, okay! go ahead, melina." ms. lee said, smiling.

matt looked over at melina, who was now stuttering as she tried to come up with something to say. he leaned back in his seat, putting his hands behind his head, feeling accomplished.
