Chapter 11: Sova line-ups

After your training day, you have finally been able to return to your room and also have some free time to yourself. It was kinda cold in your room, yeah you could probably change the temperature to be higher but you couldn't be bothered figuring that out just yet.

You had time to yourself and decided to go see Viper- it had been a while since you were last able to speak with her, you also wanted to thank her for finding and returning your plush. That was the problem though- you didn't really know where to find her.

Walking through the empty base at 9pm was funky. Some agents were getting ready for bed, some of them were out socialising and others were pouring over maps and books in a cute little corner library. (*cough* Harbour and Astra *cough*)

Viper is an authority here though, realising this you figure she would have an office? Something like that? You walk around looking for any signs of her.

"Y/N? Is that you?" Your eyes quickly scan your surroundings, oh it's Sova!

"Hi Sova, yeah I'm actually trying to find Viper at the moment." You grinned awkwardly.

"Wait. Why are you out and about?" You ask Sova, noticing he looks a little windswept, some twigs caught in his hair, and the smell of rain and pine trees beginning to fill the hall...

"Just practising line-ups, nevermind it." He shakes off your question while pointing at his bow and quiver. Proceeding to offer you a goofy smile, as he pulls the twig you were eyeing earlier out of his hair.

"That's cool!" Your eyes light up seeing his bow which was glowing with radianite power. "I didn't even know we could leave this place during our stay." You start rambling to him excitedly.

"Ehm, Y/N. Most really cannot, I was preparing for something important, Brimstone gave me the all clear to practise outside, it's where I'm most powerful you see. Some of us radiants excel outdoors and can do far less when locked indoors." He says this with a frown, maybe seeing the excitement of using your own abilities on the real sky slowly fade from your expression.

"Perhaps once you are trained Brimstone will let you join me Y/N." Sova places a firm but soft hand on your shoulder, looking at you with a harsh, determined stare, trying to offer you some reassurance.

You nod. "Hopefully, and thanks." You show him the smallest trace of a smile as he suddenly realises what you said before.

"Right well, I was just about to head to Viper's lab, you can follow along if you are still so determined to see her." He chuckles at how quickly your face lights up again.

"Well follow me now, it's not far from here."

You trail behind Sova, watching as other agents wave to him as he passes. He was an impressive agent; wise, kind and powerful. All traits you'd wish to encompass one day.

It's surprising, after all this time you are finally starting to memorise the layout of the halls and rooms. Sova leads you into the main elevator, "Right Y/N you'll probably want to remember this." He shows you a blue button with the word "ADMIN" engraved.

When he presses it, the elevator travels quite deep before halting to a stop. You see just a few doors leading out of this lobby. The names on each door were Brimstone, Viper, Omen, Cypher, Chamber and Alpha[Redacted]. You were familiar with almost all the names and gave yourself a pat on the back for remembering these things.

Stopping at the door to Viper's office, Sova knocks firmly. "Just a moment!" You hear Viper yell, a bunch of mechanical sounds, what also sounds like a burst pipe and some clanging metal echo through the gaps in the door.

Sova and you share an intrigued look until finally the door clicks open. A tired looking Viper pushes the door open curiously.

"Evening Sova, oh- and Y/N, evening to you as well." To your surprise her usually soft demeanour seems stiff and serious.

"Well come in, the both of you, we don't have time to stand out here." She huffs, you can see Sova's expression turn to worry and sense new tension in the room.

She leads you through a whole lab- chemicals and machinery scattered around the place, the ventilation system running overtime, and a battery completely constructed of radianite taking up the middle of the area. Eventually Viper, Sova and yourself reach a smaller office, it's decorated neatly but looks quite untouched and simplistic.

Viper paces behind her desk and coolly against the chair behind it. "Convenient of you to bring Y/N, Sova. Have a seat, both of you." She points a gloved finger towards leather seats opposite herself.

You awkwardly sit- still out of the loop with this situation, as Sova does the same with the seat across from you, just never breaking his eye-contact with Viper.

Sova's jaw is tense as he stares Viper down. "Surely you will not worry Y/N with the details of this mission Sabine." His statement is firm, as if he is protecting you from some impending doom.

"I see no point in keeping it from her, Brim is already on his way here, and we need all the help we can get." Viper pushes firmly, looking at you with a lack of expression or emotion on her face. This is unnerving to say the least.

"Think hard, Sabine." Is all Sova says, staring daggers into Viper, clearly showing his disagreement. You move off your seat and stand between them uncertain of what to do.

"I can just go- I understand if this is a bad time and I wanna go practice..." You start rambling trying to diffuse the tension and attempt to make a quick escape from the room.

"What's going on here?" A rough voice interrupts your rambling, Brimstone enters the room, ignoring almost everyone present, completely squared in on Viper.

"Yoru's missing. We need to go now." Viper tells him, equally as stern.

You hold in a gasp, feeling like you did not need to be in this room at this moment. What is going on? He was just training with your group? Something isn't right here.

"We leave in 20." Brimstone replies, hardly taking a second to make his decision. Sova sits in the corner of the office, his head resting in his tense palm as he seems to disagree with every decision made since he entered the room.
