Bondita

I was in my room staring at the album of my childhood..

There were numerous pictures of me with Maa and My brothers but there was only one picture of me and Papa and I had always kept it close to my heart where my father looked genuinely happy while I held the trophy for getting first rank in debate competition..

I had always admired the happy, content and peaceful look on my father's face I had always adored his smile, I had always wished to be his reason of happiness and I had always wanted to make him proud..

But today looking at this picture has me completely emotionless, no more I feel anything for him, no more I like his smile, no more I respect him and no more I consider him my father..

Today he has so proudly sold his daughter to another man with an expensive car and gold ring and necklace as dowry with numerous gifts..

Tomorrow I am to be engaged to a man who is going to use me and then throw me in a corner of his house to cook and clean..

I am disgusted at my father's choice for his own daughter, and I am disgusted at myself for not having enough courage to fight for my own self and I am even more disgusted at my fate which has turned out to be so ugly..

"Bondita!!!..." Maa called entering inside my room and I refused to look at her

She could have saved me, she could have stood up for me, she could have once for her daughter gone against her husband but she didn't..and I hate her for that, I hate her..

"Get up..." She pulled me up by my arm from the bed

"So you could groom me for your son in law?" I asked her hatefully as tears blurred my vision

"Yes..." She said without hesitating and made me wear a simple red anarkali, I let her do whatever she wanted to, I had lost all hopes

After braiding my hairs and doing a little touch up, she kept a red dupatta on my head, making me stand up she smiled at me tearfully..

"Just like a bride..." She whispered putting kala tikka behind my ear

"Let's go, my son-in-law must be waiting.." she said and was about to pull me out of the room when the door got opened and my both elder brothers stood there along with Bhabhi

"Maa, what is this?" Rehan Bhai asked stepping forward

"Don't dare to stop me, Rehan-Raghu..today no one can stop me from being a mother, I have had enough of your father's nonsense and I am not letting him ruin my daughter's life now, I am not letting him marry my daughter to a lust driven man.." she declared firmly standing Infront of me and I looked at her bewildered

Is she really?

"Where are you taking her?" Raghu Bhai asked calmly moving forward and holding Maa's arms

"Somewhere where she will be free, somewhere where she will be happy, somewhere where she will be respected, somewhere where she will be loved..I am taking her to the person who will give her everything in this world.." Maa said and I furrowed my brows confusingly

"I do not know what you are talking about neither who you are talking about, but I know you would only do the best for your daughter..and non of us are going to stop you..." Raghu Bhai said and Bhabhi walked up to me hugging me

"What?" Maa mumbled looking between both her sons who shrugged their shoulders

"Honestly, Maa do you think we will let baba ruin our sister's life? We may not show it Maa but Bondita has always been dearer to us, and we know how Papa is Maa he is selfish and stupid, all he ever cares about himself and his reputation..he had never considered us his children but rather his puppet, whatever he says we do because otherwise he will get angry and take it out on you, I left my dream of becoming a fashion designer because according to him it was girlish stuff, Bhai had constant pressure of being the ideal son otherwise he is useless, We know what kind of a man our father is Maa we have seen him since childhood and we would be damned of we let him ruin our sister's life to this extent.." Rehan Bhai said and Maa sobbed falling weak while Bhai hugged her

I looked at Rehan Bhai who walked to me and kissed my forehead for the first time I saw a tear shining in his eyes as he assured me with his eyes..

"Go Maa, we will keep Papa and his family (Bua and Dadi) busy here, you go without any worry..." Raghu Bhai said Maa nodded holding my hand she tried to pull me but I stayed rooted

"Bondita let's go we don't have much time.." Maa said impatiently while everyone looked at me worriedly

"I..I can't Maa, I can't leave you all here behind, if papa gets to know about these he will kill all of us..he..he will kill you..no maa I can't..I can't do this.." I said hoarsely as tears left my eyes

"I have always been a bad mother Bondita, today for the first time I am trying to be a good mother please don't stop me..and I have your beothers with me he won't be able to even touch me.." Maa said confidently and pulled me again my brothers patted my head encouragingly and I left my room along with Maa

Cautiously we left the house and I looked at my home one last time, I do not know what life has ahead for me, I do not know where Maa is taking me, I do not know who is this person who has won my Maa's trust so much..maybe the right person maybe the wrong person..

Getting inside the cab we headed to my life's new destination..

With millions of thoughts running in my head I saw everything passing by me getting blurred as tears left my eyes...
