Chapter Nine: "The Kindness Of Monsters"

*Some believe that having power automatically means one should do something magnificent, save the world from itself, while others believe only God should have that power....no one else*

Saint City Hospital was busy, nurses were walking up and down the long halls of the ceramic tile floor, the sound of their footsteps loud enough to echo throughout, the intercom goes off waking Elijah from his sleep, he lifts his head and scanned around seeing no sign of Kai, he sits up and rubs his face to gain sense, a nurse walks by and he calls for her attention asking about the patient that was brought in last night, the nurse tells him she was taken out of ICU and is in her own room resting, but still needs to be kept under observation in case of any setbacks, she proceeds to tell him Selena's room number and left. Elijah grabs his jacket and gets up walking to said room and finds Kai standing beside her bed, Kai glanced at him for a moment and then back at the sleeping Selena, Elijah was a bit mad he had not woken him but Kai cared not for him only Selena, Kai asks Elijah what happened as he believes she must have been shot on duty, Elijah tells him she was shot by a sniper and that if he had not called to warn her she'd be dead now, Kai looks at him asking what he meant by warn her

"I saw her get killed with that shot and called to have her move to the left, she trusted me enough to listen even if she didn't know what was happening, she didn't ask what I was talking about and just did as I asked and that saved her life"

Kai glared at him still waiting for him to answer how he knew she was going to be shot and was quick to assume he had a hand in what happened to her last night but Elijah got the tingle and looked at Kai shaking his head

"No, I didn't. I knew this because.....I can see the future and it showed me that she was going to be shot straight through the heart, soon after I saw my own death and managed to react in time"

Kai squints, as Elijah was the second person he meets who has powers, first it was Kira who had Telekinetic power and now Elijah who has Precognition powers, he wonders how many more powered people were out there and why he has not heard of them before, thinking after all this time he was alone with this, admittedly he felt a weight off his shoulders when he discovers this but that was not the main focus, Elijah notices his lack of scepticism and assumes he must know something about Evos

"So someone tried to kill Selena, that someone needs to be found and dealt with, stay here in case they try again"

Kai says as Elijah shook his head, knowing her to be safe now Elijah insists on going with him to find the person who tried to kill her and himself, Kai looks him up and down and sighs, reluctantly agreeing to let him come as the two look at Selena once more and leave the room, walking to Elijah's car as Kai didn't have his, never using vehicles since he can fly anywhere. They get inside and Elijah starts the ignition and drives off with Kai directing the way

"I noticed you haven't reacted with scepticism when i told you I'm a Precognitor, which means you have encountered an Evo before or.....you're one yourself. What can you do?"

Elijah asks as Kai was silent for a moment, he does not trust easily but he felt like he could trust Elijah since he was a powered person like he was and it would lift the weight more if shared his secret with someone who could maybe relate

"Flight is my power, I can fly"

Kai says as Elijah smiles thinking it was incredible, he asks him when was he able to do so and Kai tells him when he was five he started exhibiting Inhuman capabilities, Elijah nods as he also tells him he started seeing the future when he was five as well which caught the attention of Kai as Kira had said as well she discovered her powers when she was five, Kai asks what is the significance of five that people with powers begin developing at that age, Elijah could not know but knew it was for a reason and one being to stop a bomb set to go off that could destroy Saint City and everyone in it, Water would be toxic as will the air which will be radiation, acid rain will be a thing and food will be scarce, it would be a dystopia from Hell, Kai listened as he tells him about the bomb going off that could basically end the world as they know it. The car arrives at Midas' hide out, they get out of the car and walk for a while reaching the hide out finding Midas and Ms Nobody there working, Kai has them acquainted making Midas uncomfortable with bringing a consultant for the S.C.P.D to their base of operations, Kai has Cosima relax and that he has not told him what they do and would like to keep it that way, Elijah looks around at their set up and the guns on the wall, he squints and looked at Hannah who glared at him, having a look of mistrust on her face, he sees Kai and Cosima chatting quietly and sighs, they come over once done and Elijah tells them he doesn't care about what they do and just wants to find the Assassin who shot Selena and tried to shoot him, Cosima looks Elijah up and down and walks past him shoulder shrugging him, Kai walks past him as well and watched as Cosima did her thing with computers hacking cameras to the night of the shooting but sees no angles, she then uses her satellite to view the location, zooming in on the building the shooter was positioned in, she spots them and points them out, watching them leave the building after the shooting, Cosima uses the street cameras to try and find a face on him, she was successful as one camera did catch a glimpse, she takes a photo and enhances it then ran a facial recognition, hacking phone cameras, street cameras and whatnot tracking down but the person was not yet on the grid considering her shot a decorated detective and must be laying low, she asks for their patience as eventually his face will pop up again. They wait a while, hours pass as Elijah had gone to check on Selena while Kai stayed with the ladies waiting for any sign, Cosima asks him about Kira and when he plans on finishing the job, Kai sighs and tells her his working on it, Cosima sighs and shook her head as Kai tells her Kira has Telekinetic powers so he needs to tread carefully when going up against someone as Evolved as her, considering he almost died last he fought her and she has a bounty on his head, Cosima nods and apologizes for rushing him, telling him she just wants someone as dangerous as her off the street, Kai asks what Kira did specifically to make her their target other then being Yakuza, Cosima says she has killed people before but not bad people only those who tried to come at her or posed a threat to her and her family, she does however extort money from business owners who work hard to earn their money, buying her way into their businesses and taking most of their earnings and leave enough for them to pay employees and keep some for themselves, she does help with other things in the business since she cares about image and looking presentable, Kai raised a brow seeing Kira as not as bad as she was made out to be, he tells Cosima that they should stop this pursuit and focus on more pressing matters like corrupt government officials and politicians and bureaucrats as they are the ones who extort money from people who work hard but give nothing back, and corrupting the system to be unjust to many, as many have been imprisoned for being accused, Cosima sighs and reluctantly agrees but asks about the bounty which Kai responds

"I'll take care of it, besides she owes me a rematch"

Kai said with a smirk, he knew how to get Kira off his back and kept thinking about the vision Elijah told him about in the car, about there being a bomb that will end the entire world and wanted to focus on that and that would mean staying close to Elijah so he can know what he is to know about it, Cosima gets a hit on the Assassin and placed his face on the screen, Kai grabs a gun and holsters it as Elijah walks in seeing the man, Elijah and Kai go to his address, being careful they walk to his door, Elijah gets a tingle and pushes Kai out of the way as a hole appears at the door where Kai stood from a shotgun, the man had seen the car and recognised Elijah through the window, Elijah gets up and kicks the door down as the Assassin runs, Elijah chases as did Kai, he could not take Flight as he did not want to risk being seen by bystanders, as they chase the Assassin down a car with a gang group in it recognises Kai in passing from the bounty placed on him by Kira, they turn their car and chase after Kai, Elijah picks up a skateboard in passing and throws it at the man who turns left and gets hit in the face as he does turn left, the man gets up as Elijah arrives and tackles him before he could draw his weapon to shoot, the two struggle and fight as Kai arrives and spears the Assassin, taking his down, he pulls out restraints to hold him, Elijah gets a tingle and tackles Kai as bullets fly from the gang group in the car looking to collect their bounty by killing Kai, Elijah holds Kai down as while Kai holds down the Assassin, the gang drives off before authorities could arrive, Kai gets up and was annoyed, he stands the Assassin up and they leave going to an abandoned warehouse to question the Assassin but he had already taken his suicide pill and killed himself before he could be questioned, frustrating Kai who lashes out at Elijah for not seeing that but Elijah tells him he can't see everything and he was busy saving his life from a drive by.

The boys hit a dead end but there was hope as Elijah spots a brand on his skin, not a tattoo, it was Burnes into his skin, he takes out a note book he keeps with him and a pencil, he makes the sketch of the brand and closed his notebook, standing back up and looks at Kai understanding his frustration and need to find the person responsible for shooting Selena, the two go back to the hideout, Elijah presents his sketch to Cosima who was impressed with the artistry, she scans the sketch and finds it belongs to the an ancient order called the Imperium, a secret organisation obsessed with ruling the world and making people their subjects, Imperium is well known for conducting experiments on people they abduct with the purpose of unlocking Human potential, using a drug drawn from pregnant women and inject it into people, this drug was able to temporarily unlock the power inside people, and those who had power would become even more powerful for a short burst, they need to keep taking the drug to feel that power again hence being addicted to it and making soldiers from it as well, but it was shut down by a group of Samaritan who formed an opposing organisation called Icarus, this organisation dedicates itself to helping all forms of life including the powered people, believing that their power is a gift from God since it comes from the soul, they won the battle but tumor has it the war still wages on to this day. Elijah asks why try to kill him and Selena, Cosima thinks since Elijah can see the future and works well with a decorated cop they pose a threat to them and need to be eliminated, this was the first of many attempts at their lives and they need to be careful as Imperium was everywhere and tells him to trust no one except the people in this room and his cop friend. At Saint City Hospital Selena was laying on the bed still unconscious from her surgery when a nurse comes in, blonde of hair that was tied into a bun, she looks at Selena and scans around, pulling out a needle from her coat pocket, she had the Imperial brand on her skin, as she inserts the needle into the tube she suddenly stops, she pulls it back out and turns the needle on herself, inserting it into her skin and injects herself, the substance in the syringe instantly kills the nurse as a man emerges from the dark corner of the room, he walks over to the dead Imperial nurse and scans around looking for witnesses and takes the body to dispose of it this saving Selena, but who is he and why did he save Selena? How did he save Selena without any physical interaction? Just as the mysterious man leaves, Selena wakes from her unconsciousness.
