The Massacre

I sat up harshly in my bed, the sound of two pagers going off echoing through the walls of my bedroom. But I felt something as well, in the new Uchiha district. Chakra was fading and fading fast. I rushed out of bed, not even caring that I wasn't dressed properly for combat.

I grabbed my katana from its place by the door and slid my shoes on, rushing to the Uchiha district. I felt a strange chakra, slightly familiar but something was strange.

The chakra felt like a forest fire, burning uncontrollably without bound. I found the person, large stature, and the way the chakra flowed around the body were typical of men. I was facing his back, feeling the chakra of my fellow clansmen fade from their corpses.

Finally, he turned, but he didn't rush to attack me. He stood there, silent for a moment. "Hitomi," He spoke my name, the deep voice was unfamiliar to me.

"How do you know my name?" I questioned, pulling my sword out of its sheath. "Not like it'll matter, but I'd prefer to get information about you before I kill you."

"You seriously don't recognize me?" He laughed, running at me and failing to strike me. "Can you even see anymore?"

"I can't, but I thought most people knew that. 'Hitomi of the Blind Eye' and all." I overpowered his smaller kunai blade but his chakra flared and I went through his body without cutting him. "So you're an Uchiha, why'd you turn on your clan."

I paired a strike that was going toward my back as I turned around, sweeping his legs out from under him with my foot. I focused more on sensing. I felt another chakra in the residential district of the grounds, one familiar to me completely.

"Itachi?" I asked myself, his actions seeming unusual to me. "What'd you do to him?"

"You assume I did something, he approached me, little s–" He cut himself off as I struck him again, but this time it didn't go through him. My blade stabbed through his torso, unfortunately not hitting any vital organs. "Anyway, you got here at a good time, I'm done anyway. See you in the future, you may be useful."

The mass on my blade disappeared in a flare of his chakra. I sank to my knees, my blade sitting on the ground in front of me. The bodies of my clan's warriors were all around me.

I sat there, blood on my bare shins sticking and drying, digging into the dirt and rocks underneath me. Until Kakashi showed up. "Is Minato safe?" I asked, hoping and praying that the man didn't know everything about me.

"Yes, he's with Kurenai, what happened to you?" He asked, the faint lightning buzzing and zipping around his chakra network.

"I followed the chakra signature of an unfamiliar man, I fought him and injured him, and then he retreated." I stood carefully, holding onto my husband beside me as my knees gave out. He wrapped his arms around me and held me close. "It was Itachi who did it, recruited the man I fought. He's thirteen, how could he do this?"

"If it's any comfort, Sasuke survived." Kakashi slid one of his arms under my thighs, and the other under my shoulders. I moved my arms up to hold around his neck, his ANBU uniform bringing slight comfort. "I could've been there more for him, especially after Shisui's death."

"Don't talk like that, what's done is done," I commanded, my voice harsh. "Where are we going?"

"The hospital, I thought you were in shock but you're not." Kakashi didn't stop moving toward the hospital though. "I'm taking you to check on Sasuke."

"Thank you," I rested my head on his chest, loosening my hold around his neck. "I love you."

"I love you too, Tomi."

"You're awake," I stated, not turning my head to the young boy from where I sat. "That's good."

"Hitomi, you're alive?" Sasuke asked, slight lightning flaring with the realization.

"Yeah, so is my son." I turned to the boy, not trying to freak him out. "Are you holding up ok?"

"I hate him," His tone darkened, expected.

"I do too," I debated my words, I didn't want to freak him out too badly. He was eight, old enough to understand my words, but then he could go down the wrong path in the future. "Your brother didn't act alone."

Sasuke stayed silent, probably urging me to go one.

"There was a man, he didn't tell me his name, but I fought him. I knew he was a Uchiha, but I didn't recognize his chakra signature. I could've shown up earlier, I'm sorry." I bowed my head.

Sasuke remained silent, but the pain was clear. It was pain he would carry for many years, but it was pain that I couldn't help him with.
