Log 1: Sound Of Thunder

A 10-71 Hostage

I was getting out of the car as Jim joined me by the car.
"I'm going to get a newspaper real quick. You know what I want." I say and he hurried in when I heard shots as I reached for the paper looking up I missed the paper and panicked. I got someone to call for help as I tried to find a way to get inside to take out the two men that shot Jim.
I was by the window when I watched the two men leave the room and I broke the window ducking.
"Psstt!!!Duke!" I hissed, "Duke!"
"Yeah Millie?" He asked.
"How's Jim?" I asked him.
"Don't know. Gotta go." Duke said when suddenly I found myself busting through the door and with Jim and Duke. I was a cops kid I knew all the tricks and trades of the occupation, even had academy training but dad wouldn't let me make it a Career. I was by Jim as he laid there a bullet hole in his shoulder. I looked at Duke, I didn't have to say a word he knew what I needed. Ex-corpsmen knew what army field medics and corpsmen needed.
"Can I get the aid kit behind the counter?" I asked smartly, pointing and my registered gun in my pants hidden by my father's old industrial jacket.
"Yes. And nothing else lady." The man said the gun trained on me as I got the kit. I walked back boldly the field medic and corpsmen in me coming alive. I tried to unbutton his shirt but the buttons were too small for my trembling hands. I sighed pulling my hair into a high ponytail, and I tore back his shirt finding his wound bleeding profusively. I grabbed gauze and started to dab away blood, was able to see it.
"Anybody got matches?" I asked looking up. I checked his pulse and breathing while I waited for a reply.
"Yeah. Wanna a cigarette?" The old man asked holding a rifle.
"Smart ass I need it to sterilize the needles and tweezers." I said.
"Dex, take these to her and watch her closely." The old man said handing him the small box of matches.
"Much obliged, friend." I said and lit one running the needle through it and the tweezers blowing on them. I checked to see if they were still hot, they weren't. I gave Jim the pain medication and then the Dexter guy took the tweezers when I wasn't looking.
"No sharp toys. Can't take a chance." Dexter said backing away. My trigger finger twitched as I itched to shoot them dead. I heard Mac outside and I saw Pete. My hands were crusting over with Jim's blood bleeding through the gauze I had dressed his wound with. He coughed sputtering on my knees looking up.
"Hey." He said when the smile was a grimace in pain.
"Hey trooper. Sorry about this, I didn't know.." I said when he waved his hand stopping me.
"You wouldn't have known Millie." He told me. I helped him sit up beside me.
"They took your gun." I whispered to him.
"Great.." he complained.
"I still have my piece that my father bought me. It fits the regulations." I whispered to him.
'You in the diner, can you hear me?!?!' The familiar voice of Sergeant MacDonald made me smile.
"Finally, the calvarys arrived." I say teasingly.
"Yeah we hear!" The old man shouted.
"You said you have your piece right?" Jim double checked.
"Yes man." I said when he smiled.
"When I say you hand it over to me when we get the chance. You know reserve hand signals?" He asked.
"Matter of fact I do. I'm an ex field medic and ex corpsman." I said when he smiled.
"That's my girl." He said smiling, "Just when I give you the signal toss it to me Dig?"
"Dig." I said nodding in agreement.
'I'll make a deal with you!' Mac said.
"Go on!!!" The old man shouted.
'You guys come out with your hands up!' Mac attempted to compromise.
"No deal!!!!" The old man shouted.
"Damn.." I muttered hitting my fist against the booths table.
We needed to get Jim outta here and to a doctor stat before infection sets in killing him. I trembled all over sitting across from the window I broke out Jim next to Me, with me shielding him. I felt his hand on mine drawing a small circle beads of sweat on both our hands.
