"The dosage will be a little higher today, okay?" the doctor said soothingly, and he gently strapped on the belts and cuffs to my body, hands and legs. "It'll hurt only a little."

"..... whatever."

The doctor smiled sadly at my lacklustre answer, but he didn't say anything regardless. He signaled to the other nurses and doctors in the area to bring him his equipment.

"We'll put you to sleep, buddy. You'll be out like a light," the doctor said. "Sweet dreams."

"Hmm."

I watched as the doctor slowly placed a strange gas mask over me, and I breathed in the anesthesia deeply to drag myself to sleep.

I didn't want to be awake when they pierce me with needles, after all.

"....."

I couldn't go to sleep for quite a while. It seems that the anesthesia they had provided me with was a complete dud. It was very slow acting, so I could feel the pricks for a few minutes.

I simply bit my lips in response to prevent myself from gasping out in pain. I was restrained onto the bed, so there was no way I could move around. Besides, moving around would have a worse effect on the needles. It's better to just stay put and get through this.

"Increase the dosage."

In the beginning, I didn't feel anything. But as the seconds passed by, I could suddenly feel myself get lightheaded. I could feel my blood boiling and burning up as the drugs continued to flow through my stream. Sweat trickled down my forehead, and I couldn't help but let out a scream.

The pain was becoming unbearable. The anesthesia was not working. It almost felt like I was being burnt inside by a raging inferno.

"Doctor! Doctor!"

The nurses worried for me as the bed that contained me shook violently with my outburst. I felt tears run down my face from the pain.

"You'll be fine, Keisuke.....!" the doctor encouraged me. "Just a little more, just a little more.....!"

"Stop....." I whimpered slowly, but it was inaudible. The gas mask was preventing any sound from escaping my mouth.

"Doctor, his pressure's dropping! 40 down!"

"Increase the anesthesia," the doctor ordered. "We've got the readings that we needed."

In an instant, I again felt lightheaded, but not from pain this time. My eyes struggled to remain open, and I breathed in a heavy load of anesthesia.

I closed my eyes, and allowed the feeling to engulf myself and save me from this hell.

The sun filtered into the room through the window next to my bed, and I groaned in annoyance. My eyes fluttered open slowly, and I lay lying on the bed for at least another 5 minutes.

"Ugh....."

My head was hurting, but my body didn't hurt as much as it was hurting the entire week. My hands and legs, where my joints ached, seemed to be cool now.

They've taken effect.....

But the side effects were obvious. I was so groggy and sleepy, but I knew I couldn't afford to go back to sleep. I had to attend classes, otherwise Class S would lose out. I've already taken a sick leave for an entire week, so I can't take another.
