Chapter #35 - An Escape

Coilcarairianmeinzenmarlei stood still as he was surrounded. He knew many of them recognized him, but in his panic of figuring out a way to escape every one of their faces was just a blur. Moreover, he felt unsteady. He had sworn to Q they wouldn't ever know... he had to escape now.

With a sudden strength fueled by his fear, he bolted, probably catching the pursuiters off guard. Not stopping a moment, it didn't take long until he had completely outrun any of them. He was already in the bare lands of what would have been Elger Nouvelle even days prior.

He sat down to catch his breath and suppress that side of him that yearned to go back and find where all the city's occupants had fled to.

It was too bad he had destroyed the scarf. That scarf... It controlled his emotions to keep him from being a homicidal maniac. Really, it had cursed him.

All of this was because of that silly piece of fabric.

If only Tuto had known... If I just would have told her before....

Before he knew it, he was already recalling the messed-up memory to himself.

I walked into the room and saw Tuto... didn't I? If I had spoken, I would have broken down right there. Not that I wouldn't break down anyway, but I never wanted to in front of Tuto. She was always so calm and controlled. She would've comforted me and I would have told her all that Q said in that conversation, but I was hesitant to let her suffer through that.

'I could do it alone, anyway' I had thought in the moment. Like I believed that lie. At some point, I remembered that I was just staring at her, watching her stare at me back, and I slowly moved to my desk.

'Maybe... maybe if I work, I'll forget...' Another lie I could never believe. I "read" the research papers on my desk to check for any misinformation. I was too focused on a phrase he had said to pay attention, though.

'I could also bring Tuto with us if you wished.........'

I didn't care about the rest of that conversation for the most part. Just Tuto's well-being was important to me, and Q knew it perfectly well. I probably stopped daydreaming when Tuto lightly touched my shoulder.

"Ralo... Are you ok?" I heard her sweet voice ask me. I tilted my head more upward to acknowledge that I had heard her without saying anything in return. All I had to do was resist my urge to cry. I tried my best to reach out to her, tell her everything, but my heart, head, and mouth had very different intentions from each other.

"Tuto," I shakily responded. Though I knew she was there, it sounded more of a question. "Go- go talk to Q..." My voice became quieter as I continued. It would have just cracked anyway. "I love you and won't risk your safety for anything. Not even if Q commanded me to. Even if he won't tell you, (because he won't) you are the risk that is presented for freedom. I will work here until I die if I have you, Tuto... You've always been here, what am I afraid of...? Just... please don't agree to his terms..." I finally trailed off. I had begun to cry. I was just a mess. Once I had finished responding, she got right to the point.

"Now, or later?" she quietly asked. I don't understand how she never even breaks. She's always been perfect in every way. I gulped.

"It's- I'm... fine... right now. Just- go," I assured her, unsure if she could even understand me. I felt her hand gradually release its weight from my shoulder as she removed it to walk away. I buried my face in my hands intwined with my curls.

Coilcarairianmeienzenmarlei stopped. He couldn't go over this now. He had a headache. He sighed aloud and wrote a note on a slit of paper he saw lying nearby.

Ralo... I can't do this. I need you to find a way to get rid of me. I'm scared right now. I need you to fix this mess. This secret... what I've done to Tuto and Madellinn... Elger Nouvelle... Yugo... you have to fix it without me. I'm making things worse.
