"Percy's family is fucked up."

May swung her hand towards the swear jar before dumping the carefully balanced dish into the sink and turning on the water to rinse it. She scrubbed at it, despite the the sauce having rinsed out easily. I waited by the table, unsure. With a scowl, she flung the rag down and pinched her nose, pushing up her glasses with the same motion. "That could have gone worse."

"Her dad was terrorizing her."

Percy's fear was almost tangible the entire meal, before it, and after it as her extended family finished their food--though I swore her brother never took a bite--and got ready to leave. She'd reluctantly hugged her brother, who seemed just as eager to hug her in the first place, and then her father.

Not her step-mom, which okay fine, but the way she tensed against him coupled with the pleading glance towards her mother made my pulse race. The words the man uttered to Sally were etched into my brain. He would take her if he had to. But what did had to mean in that context? I ran my tongue along my teeth. Google Translate was shit at figuring out what I was trying to type in, and so much of the second half was fuzzy.

Only those words at the end remained clear.

"I might call Happy and ask him if he can find anything," May said. She fiddled with a piece of stray hair before moving to the kettle and turning it on. The hum of electricity filled my ears, and it distracted me for a while, but it was soon drowned out by the sound of boiling water and my heart raced back to my throat.

"I'll text Mr. Stark too."

He still hadn't found anything on Percy's father, but now there was more information. I frowned as I pulled out my phone. They were all so careful to avoid giving out names. Shooting off a quick text with descriptions of her family, I chewed my lip. What could Percy's father be holding over Sally's head? Percy being home was evidentially situational based on what he--

It made too much sense. The threats to Sally, why she was so uncomfortable with him showing up, Percy's unease-- all the disconnected pieces began to fall into place.

"May." There was a lump in my throat, hard to swallow around.  My voice came out as a croak, "Do you think he's the reason Percy was missing?"

It's a short chapter, but its been a while (and my notes are not freaking helpful lol) and my grandma is currently in the hospital so, yeah, this is all you get

Hope you enjoyed!
