(Sophie's POV)
"She... She's controlling humans? But... How did they have powers earlier? Unless... It wasn't real..." My voice trailed off. "The only one who was good at illusions was..."
"Me." An emotionless voice said, levitating into the church. Everyone in the crowd gasped, including me and Keefe as Vespera floated into the room.
"Yes, Gisela might be in captivity, but I am not. While you thought I was dead, I have been perfecting my illusions. I have kidnapped two hundred humans and Gisela currently controls them with her mind. But, since her mind isn't working, I have stolen her one way of controlling them. And since
humans can be violent without guilt..." Vespera tapped something on her ear and every human in the room rose from the floor, holding up their weapons. "I will be leaving Gisela with you, since she tried to kill me. But, I think you'll have a much bigger problem in three... Two... One."And then the humans were charging at us again... And we discovered that Keefe couldn't put them to sleep like last time.
"I don't know what's happening." Keefe whispered as he clutched my hand. "I guess I got more worn out than I expected..."
"It's okay, Funkyhair," Ro said, coming up to them. "I bet I can be more violent than them." Her evil smile showed all of her pointy teeth.
"Oh, right, I forgot we're married now..." Keefe whispered as he was sitting on the floor, reaching up to pull my face down to his. Just as he was about to kiss me, a human came charging at us and we barely were able to dodge him.
I ended up landing on top of Keefe. My stomach filled with fluttery things as I stared into his ice blue eyes. I blushed when he grinned. "Are you checking me out, Foster?" He teased.
"No." I lied, helping him stand up.
"You're terrible at lying." Keefe noted. I rolled my eyes.
"Okay, lovebirds, time to fight through these zombie-like humans to get out of here. You can kiss all you want during the honeymoon." Ro said, dragging Keefe over to the corner.
"Fine." Keefe grumbled, crossing his arms.
"Aww, is little Funkyhair being clingy?" I teased.
"You're clingier!" Keefe shouted from the corner. Ro smacked her hand over his mouth and threatened to dump flesh-eating bacteria in his pants. Gross.
Anyway, I decided to put my telepathy to use and read the human thoughts in the room, shouting warnings to my friends so they would know where the humans were going to attack.
I also decided to grab Hope from her holster and attack a couple of humans. I was surprised to find that my hand didn't shake or hesitate.
That made me a little uneasy, but I kept fighting through until every human was tied up in a corner. They shouted insults as Vespera floated back into the room.
"That took a lot longer than expected." Vespera noted. "But I guess you passed."
"Passed what?" Edaline asked.
"You passed my test." Vespera said simply. "Meaning I will leave you alone if you leave us alone."
"What? What if you do a bunch of bad things while we 'leave you alone?'" Keefe questioned.
"That's the thing. You're just going to have to trust us." Vespera replied. "These humans are my property now. And they can do whatever they please."
"Yes, but most of them are wounded. We decided not to kill them, but still..." I pointed out. "Also, we're never going to trust you."
"Okay. Then I suppose this war will continue." Vespera said calmly. "Everyone else has been captured but me. That proves how ruthless I am."
"Whatever you say, Lady Creeptastic." Ro replied. "But this war is over."
Suddenly, someone appeared from the back of the church.
No, not just one person.
Thousands.
Mr. Forkle stepped out of the crowd of Black Swan members.
Black swans were described as something impossible. But I knew, in that moment, that what Ro had said was true. This war was over. Because something impossible always beats what is possible.
"I couldn't miss your wedding, could I?" Mr. Forkle asked when our eyes met. I smiled widely, mouthing, "Thank you." before I inflicted on Vespera through her protective chain.
All the humans seemed to let out a battle cry as they charged for the Black Swan members. Sandor and the rest of the bodyguards ran over to Vespera's body and captured her, dropping her next to Gisela.
Marella eventually trapped the humans in a ring of fire, and when Linh put it out, the entire league of Black Swan members pointed melders at their heads.
They finally surrendered.
"We did it, Foster!" Keefe exclaimed, hugging me tightly.
"Yes we did, Keefe. Yes we did." Then I kissed him long and slow, as if we had all the time in the world.
When I finally pulled away, he looked flushed and overwhelmed. "You're definitely the clingy one," I decided. Then I hugged my husband tightly, excited for what the future would bring.
Because Team Foster-Keefe had won.
