(Keefe's POV)
Foster was right.
She had her enhancing off earlier when I took her hand, and now her abilities were so out of control that she had turned it back on. And her telepathy had just been so strong that she collapsed.
I reached for my imparter to hail Elwin when Foster's eyelids fluttered open.
Our eyes met, and for a second everything seemed normal in her stare.
Then something registered in her mind and she scrambled away from me, eyes filled with fear and panic.
"I told you to get away from me." She whispered, tears trailing down her cheeks. "I don't want to hurt you."
My face softened. "Foster, not even crazy abilities can keep me away from you."
"I don't care." Her voice cracked, and she met my eyes again. "I can't live with the guilt if I hurt you. Please."
I opened my mouth to respond when I realized that all three of my kids were watching us with wide eyes.
"Kids. Go." Foster whispered, staring at her hands as if she was ordering them to stop shaking so hard.
"Mom, are you-"
"GO!" Foster shouted. All three kids scrambled away. Like their mother wasn't their mother anymore.
I took Foster's hands and whispered, "It's gonna be okay."
She shook her head and ripped her hands away from me. "No. Please go, Keefe. And don't ever come back."
"Now you're being ridiculous. Remember? I like a challenge." I reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear, but she shook her head.
"Maybe you like a challenge, but... If that challenge is going to hurt my family... Then maybe it's better for me to be alone." Foster mumbled.
"Come on, where's that Foster Feistiness we all love and fear a little? We can get through this. I promise." I assured her, reaching up to cup her face. She turned her head away, but I tilted it back towards me. She finally gave in, and I kissed her.
But after a couple of seconds, she pulled away, shaking her head as she sank to the floor.
"Go, Keefe." She whispered. "I can't handle it anymore. Please."
"Foster-"
"Leave. Me. ALONE!" She snapped. The last thing I saw was a red flash of light before my body hit the floor.
*****
(Sophie's POV)
When the redness in my vision cleared, I felt like I was gonna throw up.
Keefe laid on the floor, his features twisted in pain and fear.
I just inflicted on my husband.
Guilt flooded my emotions, and I shoved them away. Suddenly, I heard voices in my head. Then I realized...
I was reading the thoughts of my children.
My telepathy was so out of control that I couldn't put a wall around my consciousness, meaning I could hear the thoughts of not only my children, but also every. Single. Elf.
And human.
And goblin.
And ogre.
And dwarf.
And gnome.
And troll.
The thoughts were so much that I had to fight for control. Then suddenly, everything stopped.
No thoughts filled my head except my own. I sighed with relief and collapsed on the floor next to Keefe.
I stared at his beautiful features, my face smiling softly.
Then my smile faded.
I couldn't be around him or the rest of my family without becoming out of control.
So... Would I just be locked up by myself forever? Would the Council decide to do that?
Or worse... Would I have to wear an ability restrictor again?
Keefe's eyelids fluttered open, and his ice blue eyes lit up with joy when he saw me. But I stepped away, backing into the wall.
"Foster, it's okay. You don't have to feel guilty." He whispered. He stepped closer. My back was flat up against the wall, and his eyes filled with sadness.
"We're gonna figure this out." He promised. "Trust me."
"No." She whispered. "The Council is gonna lock me up when they find out."
"I'm not letting that happen." Keefe insisted. He took my hand and I flinched when my stomach fluttered. "We're going to hide from them. Because we're going to the Forbidden Cities."
