Blake was back from Japan. Lydia didn't know that. "Coming!" She shouted when someone knocked on her door. She opened it and saw Blake standing there, unlike the last time they were standing in this position she was smiling and excited to see him. She wasn't sick or serious, just happy.
"Surprise." He said holding the Nintendo World bag. Lydia excitedly grabbed his hand and pulled him into the apartment, closing the door behind him.
"Tell me about your trip! I need to know everything." She said as she pulled him down on the couch, excited to hear how the two-week-long trip was.
"I will, I got you stuff first."
"Stop buying me things, I don't need them."
"Yeah, but you deserve them." He said as he handed her the bag. With a wide smile, she pulled out the crown and put it on her head without hesitation. Then she pulled out the Luma and the Rosalina stuffed toys and hugged them close. (Secretly looking for tags to see how much she owed him.) "don't even try it. I already took the tags off."
"Damn it."

It had been about a week since Blake got back. They had made plans to meet at Cedar Park at eight. They agreed Blake would pick the next date night since Lydia wanted to do the picnic idea and he wouldn't let her pay him back for the stuff he got her in Japan. As she was setting up for the picnic her phone rang, Blake was calling her. "Hello," she said with a cheerful tone.
"Hey, how close are you to being set up?" Blake asked on the other end.
"I just finished." She answered as she put out the grilled chicken wraps.
"I was hoping you wouldn't say that...I can't make it. something came up." He said a hint of regret in his voice.
"Oh..." Lydia said as tears filled her eyes. "But I thought you cleared everything for today?"
"I thought I did too, but I missed one."
"That's fine. What was it?" She asked as a few tears fell and she began to clean up.
"I had to make the prettiest paper flower bouquet to top the last one," Blake said before hanging up and standing behind Lydia.
"I hate you so much." She said with a small laugh before turning around and facing him.
"Mmmm, no you don't." He said handing her the bouquet.
"Thanks." She said taking them and hugging him.
"Only the best for the best. Now, what have you made for us on this fine evening?" Blake asked as he pulled away and looked down at the food Lydia had made.
"We have mini grilled chicken wraps, grilled veggies, and some fruits. For dessert I brought a small cake," She told him as they sat down on the blanket.
"Ahh, grilled chicken, you do know the way to a man's heart." Blake joked.
The whole evening felt like a dream. Lydia would say she felt like a princess because of how he would look at her when she started talking. She felt like he wasn't just nodding and acting like he was listening. She could tell he was committing some of the things she would say to memory and he would get this glint in his eye when he would laugh at something she would say.
'Did he always look at me like this?' She thought to herself. Maybe he did, maybe he's starting to, but she didn't know. She didn't need to.
Blake would say he felt like he was in heaven. He was shocked at how much she had prepared for this and how thoughtful she was about some of it. the cake was his favorite flavor, she got his favorite soda, and she only got his favorite fruits (he knew cause she didn't like half the fruit she packed.) He liked listening to her talk because he could tell when she was really passionate about something. She would talk a little faster and get a tiny bit louder, it was something he noticed, but other people couldn't even tell the difference.
After eating most of the food and putting away what they were done with, they scooted next to each other and sat watching the sunset. It was one of the main reasons Lydia insisted on having the date at a park thirty minutes away, it had an incredible view. The picnic spot she rented was on top of a hill and she told him to be there at eight so that when they finished dinner the sun would be setting and they could eat dessert under the stars. Lydia laid her head on Blake's shoulder and he pulled her closer by wrapping his arm around her waist.
"Thank you," Blake said as his eyes stayed on the sunset.
"For?" Lydia asked confused.
"Everything. For tonight, for the movie nights, and all the other times we've spent together." He said moving his eyes from the beautiful sky to the gorgeous girl laying on him. Lydia didn't respond, she couldn't, she was too busy trying to calm the butterflies going crazy in her stomach. Blake saw the blush rise to her cheeks and smiled himself. He stood up and held his hand out to her, helping her off the ground. Lydia took his hand and watched as his other one grabbed his phone and pressed play on a song. she recognized it immediately. He tossed his phone on the blanket and placed his hand back on her waist as his other one kept a hold on hers.
He made the playlist months and months ago but knew they'd dance on their first date. In a parking lot, in her living room, or some field. He didn't care as long as he danced with her. "How on earth will we ever top this?" Lydia asked, joking, of course, she knew Blake would find a way, he always did.
"Well, the way I look at it, next time this date will be a memory and we'll be living in the moment on our next one. But truthfully, we could be caught in the middle of a natural disaster and I wouldn't care because I'd be on a date with the most amazing woman I've ever met." In that moment right there, from a couple of sentences Lydia felt like she could marry him on top of that hill. She smiled up at him before she placed both her hands on his cheeks and his hand moved to her waist where the other one still rested.
"Remember what I said about taking it slow? Yeah, forget that completely, we can make our own pace." She said before leaning up and kissing him. It wasn't another drunk kiss in a hotel room or a panicked kiss to calm a situation, it was their first kiss. Their first real kiss, the one they would always remember whenever asked about it. The one where both of them felt like they were at the top of the world. The one where they felt like it was a fairytale. A messy fairytale, but it was theirs nonetheless.
