"You need to remember the full extend of the spell you created first. I was but a child then, I didn't understand all of what Qetsiyah chanted. Still don't if I'm honest. You and her were the best and brightest magic users in our coven." Esmeralda sighs.
"I still can't believe you ran after me. You shouldn't have had to watch that." Stiles points out.
"She loved you darling," Kol points out. "She wasn't going to let you run into danger by yourself."
"That I did, and do. You were family to me Stiles." Esmeralda admits.
Kol takes Stiles' hand as Stiles looks at Esmeralda with such longing, love and pain. Throughout their many years alive, Kol had brought the idea up of adopting a child just once. It was during their first of Stiles' lives together. Kol had never brought it up again after Stiles had broken down crying, he was inconsolable for hours. Neither Stiles nor Kol knew why, but now, seeing Stiles with Esmeralda, he thinks he finally gets it.
Esmeralda was like a daughter to him, from what he's heard so far, Stiles likely raised Esmeralda for most of her young life. So when Kol asked, Stiles likely felt the emotions of losing a child without any of the knowledge on why he felt that way. A small selfish part of Kol wonders if now that Stiles knows what it's like to raise a child, that he may want to do so with Kol. But he pushes that feeling down. He will not pressure Stiles into anything.
"Now, what is it that you two came here to learn?" Esmeralda inquires.
"We wanted to know and learn more about the doppelganger allure." Kol informs.
"Ah yes, that annoying side effect of the immortality spell." Esmeralda huffs. "I wish I knew about it before I met that whore, Katherine Pierce."
"Oh?" Stiles asks.
"She wanted to learn more about her ancestors and why she looked the same as Amara and Tatia. She came seeking knowledge. And left with destruction in her wake. I ended up having to build my coven back up from the lowly place she broke them all down too. Horrid bitch." Esmeralda sniffs.
"Made the men fight over her and the women jealous of her?" Kol checks.
"Quite." Esmeralda sighs. "Thankfully she's never come back but it means I never got to test any of my hexes on her."
"Pity." Stiles and Kol agree.
"Anyway, the allure came around as a side effect. Like how vampires didn't specifically ask for compulsion but it was given to them anyway. When a human is made immortal a side effect is always some form of compulsion, allure, glamour, whatever it is that you want to call it. I personally call it manipulation." Esmeralda states.
"Does that mean you too, have some form of it?" Kol asks.
"Yes, a very slight version. I have to be touching someone and looking into their eyes. It needs to be skin on skin contact too and even then I can only suggest something. They'll more than likely do it but if it's something they really don't want to do then they won't. The doppelganger allure is very similar but much stronger. Keeps people from trying to permanently kill them too." Esmeralda informs.
"But..." Stiles starts, "Klaus did try and succeed in killing Elena to break his binding."
"Klaus is the hybrid, yes?" Esmeralda checks.
"Yes." Kol nods.
"Then the binding was very likely protecting him in some ways. An allure affects the whole of a person. Klaus wasn't whole." Esmeralda states.
That's fascinating and Kol wants to look into that further but first he has a question that has been nagging at him.
"If it's the immortality spell that caused doppelgangers, then why don't we see any of Silas' doppelgangers running about?" Kol questions.
