The classroom was abuzz with excited chatter at the announcement of this year's school trip. Even Tadano had perked up and begun flipping through a travel pamphlet, eyes rapidly scanning down the words.
Kagami seemed to be the only student without an excited smile on their face, but then again, she wasn't paying the best attention to her surroundings either. Instead, her mind was filled with trying to figure out how to financially make everything work out. She wanted to go to Kyoto with her friends. She didn't want to have to stay behind and hear about their adventures second hand when they returned.
Rapid but light tapping on her desk drew her attention from her mind to her best friend, who had been trying to ask her a question for the past five minutes. "Ishioka-san, are you alright?"
Kagami's eyes widened marginally. Tadano always knew. She couldn't burden him with the truth, but she also couldn't straight up lie to him either. For one, she'd feel terrible about doing so. For another, he would see right through her. "Just thinking about the trip is all."
Tadano gave her a look that told her that he knew it wasn't the full truth, but he didn't push it either, instead choosing to ask his question. "Is there somewhere you want to go in Kyoto?"
"I really want to experience their food district." Her mouth salivated at the mere thought, and Tadano swore he could see stars in her eyes. He muffled a laugh, not wanting her to think he was making fun of her.
"That sounds nice."

Kagami had run out of the classroom the second the bell had rung to let the students go home. Her behavior only solidified Tadano's theory that she wasn't telling him everything, and that something was definitely bothering her.
However, something seemed to be bothering Shouko as well, and as much as Tadano wanted to chase after Kagami for answers, or at the very least to just be there for her, she was long gone, leaving behind only a trail of settling dust.
Tadano poured everything he wanted to say to Kagami out to Shouko instead. How she could talk to him any time, that he might not be able to do much, but he was happy to listen.
In turn, Shouko shared her fears about the trip, how she hadn't actually gone to Kyoto for her middle school trip, instead opting to stay home, how she was scared, how she wanted to go this time with her friends.
Tadano offered ideas to try to ease her worries: he, Ishioka, and Osana would be there, they could both skip, or they could all go together at a later date. Every solution was swiftly shot down in one way or another, but as the conversation drew to a close, Shouko was feeling much better about the trip.
