𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒆𝒕, save for the faint scratching of a pencil and the occasional, deeply dramatic sigh from Jovi Winchester. She slouched in her chair like it had personally offended her, one leg hooked over the armrest, the other foot tapping anxiously against the floor. Her math workbook lay open on the table, mocking her with its neat rows of equations and cryptic symbols like it was personally designed by Satan himself.
Jennifer, perched elegantly beside her in a fitted cashmere sweater and cream slacks that somehow managed to stay spotless even in a bunker, leaned over the page with the poise of a woman who didn't know the agony of public school cafeteria pizza or failing algebra. Jennifer had come by for her weekly visit, and while her dad and uncle had gone to the morgue to follow up on some lead on Lucifer—Jennifer had been spending that alone time with her.
"This is literally designed to ruin my life," Jovi muttered, stabbing at the equation like it owed her money. "I don't need math. I'm going to marry rich."
Which — just to clarify — did not mean Cruz Walker.
Like, obviously not. Just because she talked to him every day and had basically memorized the exact way his voice dipped when he said her name didn't mean anything. And that sapphire bracelet on her wrist? A gift. A friendship bracelet. A very luxurious, wildly inappropriate, friendship bracelet that was currently hiding under the sleeve of her oversized sweatshirt like a shameful secret.
And okay, maybe she was already planning their next secret meetup —whatever. That didn't mean she liked him. It was just convenient. Like Uber Eats for... affection. He was just something to do. A very hot, infuriating, forbidden something-to-do who kissed like a sin she didn't even feel sorry for committing.
But no. No. She didn't have feelings for him. Feelings were for people who cried at dog movies and thought their high school sweetheart was their soulmate. Jovi Winchester was above feelings. Or at least she would be, once her skin stopped burning every time she thought about his hands on her waist.
