It was 1976 in Northampton, Massachusetts when it happened. My mother was only about 13 years old. At the time, in a big house along the winter woods lived my mother Beth, her older sister Darla, her younger sister Kristen, her mother Doris, and her father Bill. Bill had always been a careful man, he had always slept with his bedroom door cracked open. But on one night he forgot to. After my mother and her sisters had gone to bed and were tucked in tightly Doris and Bill went to bed, but the door was not cracked it was completely shut. Later that evening someone broke in. Almost everything was gone. My mother’s violin, Darla’s French horn, Kristen’s trumpet were all gone.
