Lorrie-
"Miss Scott, see your doctor in three months to have the cast removed." The ER doctor says, "And give that foot of yours a rest. No more dancing for a while. Make sure you use those crutches. Stay off that foot. And be careful with all the ice."
"Thank you doctor." I tell him with a grateful smile even though this trip is going to cost both Benny and I a fortune. Benny helps me off the table.
"Don't move." He tells me, like I could go anywhere. Brilliant Benny. He holds out both hands palm toward me to stop me from moving. He heads over to the corner where my crutches are and brings them back to me, "Here." He says.
"Thanks Ben." I tell him fixing the crutches, "We might make it home before mom if we hurry. Then we won't have to explain why Mrs. Lane is at the house with Nikki again." We both hurry off into the late night early morning air. I hope the car starts. I hope this hospital visit doesn't break us. So many things I hope for. I thank God that we live next to a nice elderly lady who doesn't mind watching Nikki when Benny and I can't make it home or have to leave.
I just wish we didn't have to rely on her so much. We should be able to rely on our own parents, but that's a pipe dream. Right? It's crazy. A fantasy. Something that'll never happen. Dad'll always be in Europe shooting the next big block buster. Mom's always going to be at the office until way past midnight getting in to sleep for two hours eat breakfast make coffee and then leave again. It's just us three. We're all we've got.
