-Chapter Forty One-

“So what you’re saying is that Jake completely left you at the party?” Danielle inquired, trying to sort the information I just told her out in her brain. I told her everything about last night, except about the kiss.

“Yes.” I sighed. “What do you think will happen if Audrey ever wakes up? You know… if she comes out of her coma?”

“I don’t know, babe,” she replied. “All you can do right now is cross your fingers and hope for the best.”

“I know…” I let my sentence drift off somewhere into space, leaning back and resting my head against my bed’s headboard.

“You know what? You and I need to have some girl time. We have to get out, and have some fun. Just me and you.”

I stared at her plainly. She must be crazy if she thinks I’m going to get out of the protection of my bed anytime soon. “You’re not serious right now, are you?”

“Dead serious. Come on, it will be fun! You need to cheer up anyway. You have been in bed all day long, and I think it’s about time you get off your lazy butt. Get up and get into a hot bathing suit—now. We’re going to the beach. I’ll buy you an ice cream if you go.”

I rolled my eyes at my best friend. “I don’t want to,” I whined, rolling over in my bed. She realized that I wasn’t going to get up and pulled the blankets off of me.

“Get up. I swear, Alex, if you do not get up right now, I will scream as loud as I can possible manage.”

Pouting, I gave in to her. “Fine… geez.” I rolled my eyes again and stumbled out of bed, wearing nothing but a big tee shirt—that just somehow managed to be Jake’s—and a pair of underwear on. Why in the world did I have one of Jake’s shirts in my room, folded neatly in my pajama drawer? And how did I not notice earlier when I put it on? I frowned at the thought of him. “I’ll be ready in thirty.”

“’Kay.” Danielle walked to my bedroom door, and before exiting, turned around. “You better not get back into that bed, because if you do, I will—”

“I won’t, chill! Now I would like to take a shower and get ready, if you don’t mind.”

          “Okay, bye. Hurry!”

“I will.” She left, leaving me alone in my room. Raking my hands through my hair a couple of times, I decided that maybe the beach wouldn’t be such a bad thing for me at the moment.

I puffed out my cheeks, letting out a deep breath and began to get ready.

I frowned at the cone of ice cream in front of me. It was basically completely melted, thanks to the blazing sun. So much for getting ice cream, I thought.
