*Evie's POV*

There is a gate, along the side of our side. It leads to the vampire world. Mum told me to never cross it, or get near it. Vampires are monsters, she said. Vampires don't show mercy.

"Don't you ever get close to that fence, or before you know it, your name will go into the drawing again. And I can't bere to lose you." That's what Dad said. But if he meant that, why did he leave?

Sometimes I would get close to that fence, and I would always see the same boy, same age, about 19, each time. Brown curls, green eyes, pale skin. Didn't look like a vampire but the pale skin. Never changed. But that's how vampires are.

Each year, people, starting at ages 10-20, will be forced to put there name in a draw. 5 names will be pulled. Those people will be forced to pack their bags and move, to live with a vampire on the other side of the gate, in the vampire world. Government officials say, it's to keep our populations the same. Vampires don't have babies. But humans do.

Mum thought Dad left because of her, but I think it was because of me. I was 10 then, it was the day before the picking. I would put my name in for the first time. My little sister Bri was 5 then. She was lucky.

Dad said he never wanted to see me go. Maybe he thought I would get picked. Maybe that's why he left us. Some people say, he crossed the gate. I don't think so. He hated vampires.

But that doesn't matter anymore. Tomorrow will be my 7th picking. 7 small pieces of paper put into a glass bowl with thousands of other names. But I'm not scared. I never get picked.

This is Bri's first time. I'm more afraid for her, then myself.

But, I guess it's just the luck of the draw.
